What Are Fairy-Type Pokémon?

Fairy-type Pokémon, known as the “Dragon Killers,” are the newest addition to the franchise. Besides being the newest, this Pokémon type is also one of the rarest. There are only 59 Fairy-type Pokémon in the entire series, and only 32 of them are currently available in Pokémon Go. However, you’ll rarely come across a Pokémon that is purely Fairy-type; in fact, most of the strongest Fairy Pokémon have dual typing, which makes them versatile companions.

Most of the iconic Fairy-Type Pokémon, like Togekiss and Wigglytuff, are known primarily for being adorable. But despite looking like they’re incapable of hurting anything or anyone, Fairy-type Pokémon can be viable options for Raids and Battles, too. They possess magical and supernatural abilities, like purification and rejuvenation. This chart shows how Fairy-type Pokémon fare against the other types.

Offense Defense
Fairy Super Effective Against Not Very Effective Against Resistant To Weak To
Dark, Dragon, Fighting Fire, Poison, Steel Dragon, Bug, Dark, Fighting Poison, Steel

Generally, Fairy-type Pokémon lurks around places of interest like monuments or local landmarks, as well as around churches and cemeteries. Not all of them can be found in the wild, though. Sometimes, you’ll have to hatch them from Eggs or defeat them in Raid Battles before you can obtain them.

Best Fairy-Type Pokémon in Pokémon Go

Below is a list of the 15 best Fairy-type Pokémon to have in Pokémon Go. They’re arranged from the most powerful to the least powerful based on the average of each Pokémon’s max CP and base stats.

1. Xerneas

Xerneas, one of the best Fairy type Pokemon in Pokemon Go
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 4,275
Base Stats Attack: 250; Defense: 185; Stamina: 246
Additional Pokémon Types None
Best Moveset Offense: Tackle and Giga Impact; Defense: Zen Headbutt and Giga Impact
Evolutions None
Base Capture Rate 2%
Base Flee Rate 1%

Xerneas, one of Generation VI’s Legendary Pokémon, tops our list of the best Fairy-Type Pokémon. It’s one of the Pokémon that were ushered in years after the game’s launch. With a max CP of 4,275, it’s definitely one of the most powerful contenders in the game. Plus, it has impressive attack, defense, and stamina stats. Thus, you can rely on it to deal significant damage and stay on the battlefield for long.

Xerneas is a pure Fairy-type Pokémon and, just like other Legendary Pokémon, is rare and can be pretty tricky to defeat in a Raid Battle. However, it’s not entirely impossible. It’s weak to Steel- and Poison-type attacks, so if you have Pokémon of either type, you can use those against Xerneas. Or if you’ve caught Pokémon that know Steel and Poison attacks, those are useful, too. Some of the best Pokémon that can go head-to-head with Xerneas are Mega Gengar, Mega Venusaur, and Lucario.

Possible Locations: You can catch Xerneas in GO Battle Leagues or after defeating it in a Raid Battle.

2. Togekiss

Togekiss

Max CP 3,767
Base Stats Attack: 225; Defense: 217; Stamina: 198
Additional Pokémon Types Flying (Secondary Type)
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Charm and Dazzling Gleam
Evolutions Evolves from Togetic
Base Capture Rate 1%
Base Flee Rate 5%

Our runner-up for the best Fairy-type Pokémon is Togekiss, which is also known as the Jubilee Pokémon. Togekiss is a pocket monster from Generation IV and boasts a max CP of 3,767. Besides having an impressive max CP, its base stats are high as well, so it’s good as both an attacker and defender. Thanks to its dual typing, it’s resistant to a wide range of attacks, like Dark, Grass, Bug, and Ground. Plus, it can learn a variety of moves, although you’ll get the best results with Charm and Dazzling Gleam.

Togekiss is a rare catch in Pokémon Go, but given its impressive stats, you’ll want one on your Pokédex. You’ll need either a Togepi or Togetic to get Togekiss through evolution. If you’re starting with Togepi, you need to feed it 25 Candies for it to evolve into Togetic. From there, Togetic will need 100 Candies and a Sinnoh Stone before turning into Togekiss.

Possible Locations:  You can only obtain a Togekiss by evolving either a Togepi or a Togetic. Togepi is available through trading or by hatching Eggs. As for Togetic, you can find one in the Wild (particularly near churches, cemeteries, and famous locations), through trading, or after defeating it in a Raid Battle.

3. Gardevoir

Gardevoir

Max CP 3,497
Base Stats Attack: 237; Defense: 195; Stamina: 169
Additional Pokémon Types Psychic (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense: Confusion and Psychic; Defense: Confusion and Dazzling Gleam
Evolutions Evolves from Kirlia
Base Capture Rate 5%
Base Flee Rate 5%

Gardevoir is a Psychic/Fairy Pokémon from Generation III. With a max CP of 3,497 and an attack stat of 237, it’s definitely one of the best Fairy-type Pokémon in the game. What’s great about Gardevoir is that it isn’t doubly weak against any Pokémon type. However, it does receive 160% of damage from Ghost-, Poison-, and Steel-type attacks, so try not to use it against Pokémon of those types. Gardevoir is a great option if you’re heading to battle against any Psychic-, Fighting-, or Dragon-type Pokémon.

It’s fairly easy to catch a Gardevoir in Pokémon Go since it’s obtainable in multiple ways. To get a Gardevoir through evolution, you’ll need either a Ralts or a Kirlia. You’ll first need to feed Ralts 25 Candies to evolve it into a Kirlia. Then, once you have a Kirlia, you’ll need 100 Candies to turn it into a Gardevoir.

Possible Locations: Besides evolving either a Ralts or a Kirlia, you can also catch a Gardevoir after defeating it in a Raid Battle. It’s also obtainable through research tasks and special events.

4. Sylveon

Sylveon
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 3,470
Base Stats Attack: 203; Defense: 205; Stamina: 216
Additional Pokémon Types None
Best Moveset Charm and Dazzling Gleam
Evolutions Evolves from Eevee
Base Capture Rate 12.5%
Base Flee Rate 6%

Sylveon, a pure Fairy-type from Generation VI, is one of the latest additions to Pokémon Go. Besides having an impressive max CP, Sylveon also has excellent attack and defense capabilities. Plus, with a stamina stat of 216, you can rely on it to deal with attacks quicker and last longer in a battle. It’s also only weak to two types, Steel and Poison, but it doesn’t receive critical hits from either type.

Obtaining Sylveon through evolution can be tricky, especially since its basic form Eevee can evolve into eight different Pokémon. Besides needing 25 Candies to evolve Eevee, you also need to rename it “Kira” so that it evolves into Sylveon specifically. However, the catch is that you can only use this technique once. So, if you want more than one Sylveon, you’ll have to use the second trick, which involves earning 70 hearts with Eevee as your buddy. After you’ve acquired all those hearts, you can then feed Eevee 25 Candies to turn it into Sylveon.

Possible Locations: You can only obtain a Sylveon by evolving an Eevee. Since Eevee is a Normal-type Pokémon, you can find one almost anywhere.

5. Granbull

Granbull
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 2,885
Base Stats Attack: 212; Defense: 131; Stamina: 207
Additional Pokémon Types None
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Charm and Play Rough
Evolutions Evolves from Snubbull
Base Capture Rate 15%
Base Flee Rate 8%

Granbull, from Generation II, boasts strong attack and stamina stats and has access to a variety of moves, including those in the Dark and Fighting categories. Plus, just like other pure Fairy-type Pokémon, it’s only weak to Poison- and Steel-type attacks. However, its defense stat is glaringly low at 131. With that in mind, be sure to defeat your opponents quickly if you’re bringing a Granbull into a raid.

One of the ways you can get a Granbull is by evolving it from Snubbull. To do so, you’ll need to feed it 50 Candies.

Possible Locations: You can catch a Granbull in the Wild, particularly in and around churches, cemeteries, and famous locations. It’s also obtainable through Raid Battles.

6. Galarian Rapidash

Galarian Rapidash
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 2,782
Base Stats Attack: 207; Defense: 162; Stamina: 163
Additional Pokémon Types Psychic (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Psycho Cut and Psychic
Evolutions Evolves from Galarian Ponyta
Base Capture Rate 15%
Base Flee Rate 6%

Next on our list of the best Fairy-type Pokémon is Gen VIII’s Galarian Rapidash. Its defense and stamina stats are decent, but what makes it a solid contender are its attack capabilities. Galarian Rapidash is sort of an odd one because it doesn’t have access to Fairy-type Fast Moves despite being a Fairy-type. However, if you teach it the Charged Move Play Rough, it can be quite a formidable opponent, especially against Dragon-, Dark-, and Fighting-type Pokémon.

To obtain a Galarian Rapidash through evolution, you’ll need a Galarian Ponyta, which is fairly hard to capture. To evolve a Galarian Ponyta into a Galarian Rapidash, you’ll need to feed it 50 Candies. If you have multiple Galarian Ponyta in your Pokédex, make sure to pick the one with the highest CP to evolve. That way, the Galarian Rapidash it evolves into gets a head start.

Possible Locations: You can only obtain a Galarian Rapidash by evolving a Galarian Ponyta. You can catch a Galarian Ponyta through research tasks, by hatching 7-km eggs, or after defeating it in a Raid Battle.

7. Clefable

Clefable

Max CP 2,755
Base Stats Attack: 178; Defense: 162; Stamina: 216
Additional Pokémon Types None
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Charm and Meteor Mash
Evolutions Evolves from Clefairy
Base Capture Rate 10%
Base Flee Rate 6%

Clefable, an iconic Pokémon from the first generation, takes the seventh spot on our list of the best Fairy-type Pokémon. Clefable is a standout since it’s one of the few Pokémon that have access to the legacy move Pound. However, you will need an Elite Fast TM (or technical machine) before you can teach it this legacy Fast Move. Since it’s a pure Fairy-type Pokémon, it’s only weak to two types of attacks: Poison and Steel. Plus, with its relatively high stamina, it can dish out attacks quickly and last longer in battles.

Clefable is classified as a Super Rare Pokémon, so catching it in the Wild can be tough. An easier way to obtain one is by evolving either a Cleffa or a Clefairy. To evolve a Cleffa into a Clefairy, you’ll need to feed it 25 Candies. You’ll need to then give the Clefairy 50 Candies so that it can turn into a Clefable.

Possible Locations: You can find a Clefable in the Wild, particularly near churches, cemeteries, and famous locations. You can also catch one through research tasks or after defeating it in a Raid Battle.

8. Alolan Ninetales

Alolan Ninetales

Max CP 2,610
Base Stats Attack: 170; Defense: 193; Stamina: 177
Additional Pokémon Types Ice (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense: Charm and Weather Ball; Defense: Charm and Ice Beam
Evolutions Evolves from Alolan Vulpix
Base Capture Rate 10%
Base Flee Rate 6%

Alolan Ninetails is another formidable Fairy-type Pokémon to have in Pokémon Go. Thanks to its dual Ice typing, it’s especially resistant to Dragon-type attacks. It’s also a solid option for a Great League contender, particularly against Altaria.

To add Alolan Ninetales to your Pokédex, you’ll need an Alolan Vulpix, which is extremely rare in the game. Once you’ve obtained an Alolan Vulpix, you’ll need to feed it 50 Candies to evolve it into Alolan Ninetales.

Possible Locations: Currently, Alolan Ninetales is obtainable only by evolving an Alolan Vulpix. You can catch an Alolan Vulpix by hatching Eggs, during special events, through research tasks, or after defeating it in a Raid Battle.

9. Galarian Weezing

Galarian Weezing
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 2,592
Base Stats Attack: 174; Defense: 197; Stamina: 163
Additional Pokémon Types Poison (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Tackle and Play Rough
Evolutions None
Base Capture Rate 20%
Base Flee Rate 6%

Generation VIII’s Galarian Weezing is ninth on our list of the best Fairy-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go. The good thing about Galarian Weezing is that thanks to its Poison typing, it isn’t weak to Poison-type attacks, unlike most Fairy-type Pokémon. It’s also resistant to a wide range of attack types, including Bug, Dragon, and Fighting.

Defeating a Galarian Weezing in a Raid Battle can be tough, but it isn’t as difficult as defeating Legendary Pokémon. The best Pokémon to use against a Galarian Weezing are those that know Steel-, Psychic-, and Ground-type attacks. Some of the best counters for this Pokémon are Shadow Mewtwo, Metagross, and Excadril. Bringing another trainer to battle with you will also help. But you can also win the battle alone as long as your level is fairly high and you use the right counters.

Possible Locations: You can catch a Galarian Weezing after defeating it in a Raid Battle.

10. Mr. Mime

Mr. Mime

Max CP 2,518
Base Stats Attack: 192; Defense: 205; Stamina: 120
Additional Pokémon Types Psychic (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Confusion and Psychic
Evolutions Evolves from Mime Jr.
Base Capture Rate 30%
Base Flee Rate 9%

Mr. Mime, Generation I’s humanoid Pokémon, is a good opponent against Psychic-, Dragon-, and Fighting-type Pokémon. Plus, it’s a good addition to a team if you need a Pokémon with reliable defensive capabilities. However, be wary of matching it up against Ghost-, Poison-, and Steel-type Pokémon.

Mr. Mime is extremely rare in Pokémon GO and can only be found in Europe. You can acquire Mr. Mime through evolution, and to do so, you’ll first need a Mime Jr. Once you’ve obtained one, you’ll need to walk 15 km with it as your Buddy Pokémon and feed it 50 Candies before evolving it into Mr. Mime.

Possible Locations: You can catch Mr. Mime in the Wild, especially in cities, through Raid Battles, and by hatching Eggs.

11. Whimsicott

Whimsicott

Max CP 2,277
Base Stats Attack: 164; Defense: 176; Stamina: 155
Additional Pokémon Types Grass (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Charm and Grass Knot
Evolutions Evolves from Cottonee
Base Capture Rate 15%
Base Flee Rate 5%

Whimsicott is one of the best Fairy-type Pokémon to have in Pokémon Go. Its max CP of 2,277 is fairly impressive, and its base stats, which focus more on defense, pack quite a punch as well. This Pokémon is resistant to a wide range of attack types, including Dragon, Dark, Electric, and Ground. However, you’ll have to look out for Pokémon that know Fire-, Flying-, Ice-, Steel-, and (most especially) Poison-type attacks.

One of the ways you can acquire a Whimsicott is by evolving a Cottonee. To do so, you’ll need to give Cottonee 50 Candies and a Sun Stone.

Possible Locations: You can catch a Whimsicott by accomplishing research tasks or by evolving a Cottonee. You can usually find a Cottonee around residential areas, golf courses, parks, and gardens.

12. Wigglytuff

Wigglytuff
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 2,178
Base Stats Attack: 156; Defense: 90; Stamina: 295
Additional Pokémon Types Normal (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense: Pound and Hyper Beam; Defense: Charm and Play Rough
Evolutions Evolves from Jigglypuff
Base Capture Rate 20%
Base Flee Rate 6%

Despite having a dreadfully low defense stat and an average-at-best attack stat, Generation I’s Wigglytuff still deserves a spot on the best Fairy-type Pokémon list. Its stamina stat of 295 is pretty impressive and is the highest on this list. Since it has high stamina, it can serve special moves at a much quicker pace. Plus, it’s only weak to Poison- and Steel-type attacks.

Finding a Wigglytuff in Pokémon Go can be tricky since it’s quite rare. You can, however, evolve it from either Igglybuff or Jigglypuff, which are both easier to find in the Wild. To evolve Wigglytuff from Igglybuff, its basic form, you need to feed it 25 Candies so that it turns into Jigglypuff. From there, you’ll need to feed Jigglypuff 50 Candies so that it evolves into Wigglytuff, its final form.

Possible Locations: You can catch a Wigglytuff in the Wild, particularly near residential areas, parking lots, schools and universities, stadiums, and libraries.

13. Klefki

Klefki
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 2,204
Base Stats Attack: 160; Defense: 179; Stamina: 149
Additional Pokémon Types Steel (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense: Tackle and Play Rough; Defense: Astonish and Play Rough
Evolutions None
Base Capture Rate 20%
Base Flee Rate 10%

Klefki, a Pokémon from Generation VI, takes the 13th spot on our list of the best Fairy-type Pokémon. Klefki’s strength is in its unique typing. It’s one of the few Steel-/Fairy-type Pokémon in the game, which means the two types of attacks that Fairy-type Pokémon are normally weak to (Poison and Steel) don’t do any damage to Klefki. That aside, it is also resistant to eleven attack types, including Dragon, Bug, and Rock. However, do look out for Pokémon that know Fire and Ground attacks since Klefki receives 160% of damage from these.

Possible Locations: Klefki is a Pokémon that’s exclusive only to France. However, other players have also reported seeing it in some parts of England, like Brighton, as well as in Spain, Italy, and Germany.

14. Azumarill

Azumarill
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 1,795
Base Stats Attack: 112; Defense: 152; Stamina: 225
Additional Pokémon Types Water (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense and Defense: Bubble and Play Rough
Evolutions Evolves from Marill
Base Capture Rate 15%
Base Flee Rate 7%

Generation II’s Azumarill may seem adorable and friendly, but it’s also one of the strongest Fairy-type Pokémon in the game. Its attack and defense stats aren’t much, but its stamina stat of 225 means it can dish out damage quickly. This Pokémon is also resistant to lots of different attack types, like Dragon, Bug, Dark, and Ice. Plus, it can learn a wide range of attacks, including Fighting and Ice. That said, it is weak to Electric-, Grass-, and Poison-type attacks, so try not to match it up against Pokémon of those types.

Azumarill isn’t a rare Pokémon, so adding it to your Pokédex shouldn’t be too hard. One way to obtain it is by evolving it from either an Azurill or a Marill. If you’re starting with an Azurill, the unevolved version, you’ll need to give it 25 Candies so that it evolves into a Marill. After that, you also need to give the Marill 25 Candies for it to turn into an Azumarill.

Possible Locations: You can catch an Azumarill in the Wild, particularly near bodies of water, such as canals, rivers, and lakes. You can also capture one through research tasks or after defeating it in a Raid Battle.

15. Mawile

Mawile
Photo from Pokemon
Max CP 1,848
Base Stats Attack: 155; Defense: 141; Stamina: 137
Additional Pokémon Types Steel (Main Type)
Best Moveset Offense: Fire Fang and Play Rough; Defense: Ice Fang and Play Rough
Evolutions None
Base Capture Rate 50%
Base Flee Rate 9%

Last on our list of the best Fairy-type Pokémon is Mawile. This Pokémon is most recognizable by the gaping mouth at the back of its head, which it uses to chomp on unsuspecting foes. Although its overall stats aren’t as impressive as its fellow Fairy-type Pokémon, it is resistant to eleven types of attacks, just like Klefki. It can also learn a variety of moves outside of its typing, like Dark-, Ghost-, and Ice-type attacks.

As of writing, Mawile doesn’t evolve into any other Pokémon. You can, however, obtain it through tier 3 raids. The best Pokémon to use against Mawile are Chandelure, Darmanitan, and Blaziken. Bringing another trainer to battle would make defeating Mawile much easier. However, doing it alone would also be manageable as long as you use the right counters.

Possible Locations: Mawile doesn’t normally lurk in the Wild, but you can sometimes find it in industrial areas, like industrial parks, schools, and railway stations. You can also catch it through Raid Battles and, sometimes, by hatching Eggs.

Train The Best Fairy-Type Pokémon in Pokémon Go

Most Fairy-type Pokémon seem adorable and harmless, but that doesn’t mean they don’t pack a punch. Thanks to their dual typing, most of the best Fairy-type Pokémon can go head-to-head with a variety of Pokémon types. Although some of them are quite rare and hard to catch, the ones that you can obtain through Raid Battles aren’t as tricky to defeat as other Pokémon. And once you’ve caught them, you’ll find that they’re great additions to your team.
