How Many Eggs Are There in Monster Hunter Stories?
There are a total of 235 MH Stories eggs that are available for you to catch. Each of these eggs falls into one of 13 types or species, which are as follows:
- Amphibian
- Herbivore
- Bird Wyvern
- Brute Wyvern
- Flying Wyvern
- Piscine Wyvern
- Fanged Wyvern
- Fanged Beast
- Leviathan
- Temnoceran
- Elder Dragon
- Leviathan
- Carapaceon
The type/species of the Monstie inside the egg determines the egg’s pattern. We’ll discuss that later on in our Monster Hunter Stories egg list.
Monster Hunter Stories Egg List: How to Get Rare Monstie Eggs
Before we dive into our Monster Hunter Stories egg list, let’s first go over how you can get rare eggs in the game. Keep in mind that every time you search a nest, you’re only allowed to take home only one out of all the eggs in that nest. Thus, make sure to seek out rare eggs since they contain stronger Monsties that will help you out a lot when battling enemies.
Where to Find Rare Monster Hunter Stories Eggs
When searching for rare Monster Hunter Stories eggs, the first thing you should consider is the type of Monster Den you’re going into. In all, there are three types of Monster Dens in the game:
- Normal Dens
- Rare Dens
- High-Rank Dens
Rare dens, which look like gold caves, are what you really want to look out for if you want to collect rare Monster Hunter Stories eggs. The Monsties in the eggs of these Monster Dens are usually (but not always) of a higher quality and have better genes. Normal dens (which have a gray exterior) are fine, too, but we only recommend going inside these if you’re just starting out and growing your ranks. Otherwise, they’re not really worth exploring. High-rank dens, denoted by a red entrance, house high-rank eggs but are extremely hard to find. You’ll only find these in the postgame.
How to Identify Rare Eggs in Monster Hunter Stories
Navirou, your Felyne companion, will help you out with picking rare eggs. All you need to do is pay attention to what he says.
As you enter a Monster Den, Navirou will comment on the atmosphere, which gives you an idea of how likely you are to take home a good-quality egg. He’ll give one of these three assessments about the den: normal, good, or dangerous. If the den feels normal to him, that means the eggs in the nest can range anywhere from bad to good-quality. If he says it’s dangerous, the quality of the egg depends on the strength of the monster that’s guarding the nest. What you want to look for are dens that Navirou says have a good atmosphere; these are more likely to give you higher-quality eggs.
Then, when you’re rummaging through the egg nest, Navirou will also comment on the smell and the weight of each egg you pick up. The smell determines how good the Monstie’s genes are, and the weight determines how many Bingo slots are available. Essentially, the better-smelling and heavier an egg, the rarer and higher-quality it is. Here’s a chart that shows you which eggs to prioritize getting, arranged from high-priority to low-priority:
Smell | Weight |
Very nice smell | Very heavy |
Nice smell | Heavy |
Smelly | Little bit heavy |
Little bit smelly | Normal |
Doesn’t smell | Little bit light |
Light | |
Very light |
Ideally, you’ll want to take home an egg that both has a very nice smell and is very heavy. However, these don’t always come by, especially if you’re still starting out. You may get an egg that smells very nice but is only light. To help you decide which egg to take home, consider what Monsties you already have and which ones you still need.
How to Catch Rare Eggs in Monster Hunter Stories
The simplest way to catch rare eggs in Monster Hunter Stories is to go into a Monster Den, locate the egg nest, and rummage through them to get an egg. As we’ve mentioned, just because you’re in a golden, rare Monster Den doesn’t mean any egg you take home from it will be a rare egg. Thus, always pay attention to Navirou’s assessment of each egg to know which one to get.
If you want to catch a rare egg of a certain monster, you’ll need to go to where that monster usually roams and defeat it in a battle. Some monsters will go back to their dens once they’ve been defeated, which then allows you to follow them to their nest and take home their eggs. Take note, however, that not all monsters do so. To increase the chances of a hatchable monster retreating to its den, you can throw three Paintballs at it when it’s low in health. Make sure to also bring a Qurupeco with you if you can since this allows you to summon a monster to battle.

How to Hatch Monster Hunter Stories Eggs
Besides a Monster Hunter Stories egg list, you also need to know how to hatch the new eggs you’ve caught. That way, you can begin your journey with your new Monsties and bring them to battle when the time comes.
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide on how to hatch Monster Hunter Stories eggs:
- Head over to the Stables and approach Stable Paw.
- Tap on Egg Carton to visit your eggs.
- Tap on Hatch Egg.
- Select the egg you want to hatch.
- Tap the egg to hatch it.
Once you’ve tapped the egg, it will begin to break, and the Monstie inside it will be revealed. If the egg hatches with a gold background, that means your new Monstie has a great gene pattern. If the background is blue, its gene pattern is only normal.
Is Monster Hunter Stories 2 Coming to Mobile?
As of writing, Monster Hunter Stories 2 is only available to play on the Nintendo Switch and on PC; there’s currently no news about whether it’s coming to mobile. However, don’t let that get you down just yet. Remember that the first Monster Hunter Stories was only released for Nintendo 3DS back in 2016. However, it did come to iOS and Android two years later. If that’s any indication of which platforms MH Stories 2 will be available on, there’s a good chance that the game will also come to mobile after a while.
