Grass-Type Pokémon: What Are They?

Grass-type Pokémon has been under the radar since the release of the game. However, in the recent updates, they have begun to rise in popularity because of the increase in Water-type Gym defenders and the abundance of Raid Bosses who are weak against Grass-type Pokémon.

Like other Pokémon types, this type has its advantages and weaknesses. These are important to consider because they will help you in battle. In any case, it’s best to familiarize yourself with the typing chart for Grass-type Pokémon.

You may refer to the chart below for the advantages and weaknesses of Grass-type Pokémon:

OFFENSE DEFENSE

Grass

SUPER EFFECTIVE  NOT VERY EFFECTIVE  RESISTANT WEAK
Water, Ground, Rock Fire, Grass, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon, Steel Water, Electric, Grass, Ground Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug

The best Grass-type Pokémon can be a bit hard to find because of the typing, especially if you’re using a Pokémon who only has a single type. Luckily, most of the Grass-type Pokémons in the game are powerful enough to get through a battle. You can still rely on dual-type Pokémon, but it may become more complex if more types are involved.

However, it might be a bit difficult for you to decide which Pokémon to bring to battle with you because all of them are great options.

That said, here are 13 of the best Grass-type Pokemon that you might want to bring with you the next time you head into a battle.

1. Venusaur

If you chose to get a Bulbasaur at the start of the game, it’s either you already have a Venusaur or you’re working on evolving your starter into one. Venusaur is one of the best Grass-type Pokémon to have because it’s one of the easiest to obtain. After all, Bulbasaur is available as a starter Pokémon. Venusaur is mainly a Grass-type Pokemon, but what makes it one of the best are its Poison-type moves. With a dual skill set, Venusaur makes for a formidable opponent in the field and a reliable companion in a team. When it transforms into Mega Venusaur, it becomes a great DPS Pokémon that deals a massive amount of damage. In all, Venusaur is one of the best Grass-type Pokémon because it’s easily obtainable and it deals a massive amount of damage in and out of Mega form.

2. Abomasnow (Mega)

Abomasnow is yet another dual-type Pokémon that makes it into the list — a grass- and an ice-type Pokémon. Unfortunately, there are a lot of trainers who don’t see this as a competitive type compared to other Grass-type Pokémons. Abomasnow still takes a spot on this list because of its sheer strength, especially when he becomes Mega Abomasnow. With its Mega Evolution, Abomasnow’s CP rises to 3850 which easily overpowers most in this list except for one. That said, if you have an Abomasnow and want to use it in battles, you might want to make sure that you have enough Mega Energy to be able to fuel Mega Abomasnow’s transformation.

3. Sceptile (Mega)

In its normal form, Sceptile has 3117 CP which is already impressive from the get-go. However, Sceptile becomes one of the strongest Grass-type Pokémon when it evolves into Mega Sceptile. With a CP of 4585, Mega Sceptile can easily sweep its enemies under the rug if we were only talking about CP. Mega Sceptile is one of the best Grass-type Pokémon because of its sheer power and high-damage skill set that’s great to use especially for raids.

4. Leafeon

At a glance, Leafeon might not look much, but with a CP of 3328, it’s a Pokémon that packs a punch. Other Grass-type Pokémons usually have CP that maxes out at 3100 that only gets a boost when they have a Mega Evolution. But for Leafeon, 3328 is its CP without needing Mega Evolution. That itself is a good thing to consider when choosing a Grass-type Pokémon and a possible evolution for Eevee. Leafeon is one of the best Grass-type Pokémon to consider if you’re looking for one that is a bit easier to catch since Eeevees are harder to catch these days.

5. Roserade

Roserade might not have the same bulk as Venusaur or Leafeon, but it’s a good substitute for those Grass-type Pokémons if you don’t have them. With a CP of 3359, Roserade can also pack a punch that can help you gain the upper hand in a battle. It might not provide the same level of damage as other DPS Pokemon, but if you manage to score a Roserade with Frenzy Plant, you’ll be good to go in most battles.

6. Tangrowth

Tangrowth is a pure Grass-type Pokémon which makes it a cut above the rest. Apart from having a CP of  3425, this Pokémon comes with high stamina and decent stats. The usual move combination for a high-damage Tangrowth is Vine Whip and Power Whip. With these moves, you’ll likely be able to deal damage to most defenders. Additionally, you won’t need Mega Evolve Tangrowth for it to shine. Tangrowth is one of the best Grass-type Pokémon for its sheer strength and because it is easy to catch.

7. Torterra

Torterra is a dual-type Pokémon that uses Grass and Ground-type moves. It has a CP of 3318, which makes it a force to be reckoned with. Despite being a dual-type Pokémon, Torterra is versatile and has well-balanced stats that allow it to deal devastating amounts of damage. You might want to teach Razor Leaf and Frenzy Plant to your Torterra as this is the best move combination for the Pokémon. In all, Torterra makes it into this list of the best Grass-type Pokémon for its raw power and ability to tear down enemies as a dual-type Pokémon.

8. Breloom

Breloom is a unique Pokémon because it is a Grass-Fight type Pokémon. There aren’t a lot of Pokémon that share the same type as Breloom, which makes it a valuable addition to your team. It can learn Fighting moves, so you don’t have to worry about threats because you can easily retaliate with your move set. Breloom’s CP is at 2971 which might make it a bit weaker than the other Pokémons in the list, but it still packs a punch because it can also use fighting moves.

9. Meganium

Meganium is the final evolution of Chikorita. It has a CP of 2725 which might make it weaker than the other Pokémon on this list, but if it’s paired with the right move set, Meganium can easily rival other Pokémons. Razor Leaf and Frenzy Plant are the best moves that will make your Meganium a force to be reckoned with. However, you might want to be wary when you use Meganium in battles because it is a pure Grass-type Pokémon and might not fare well against some types.

10. Exeggutor

Exeggutor is another unique case because it is a Grass and Psychic-type Pokémon. It has a max CP of 3408 and is considered to be one of the best attackers in the game. This Pokémon makes it into this list of the best Grass-type Pokémon because of its stats that can easily rival Venusaur’s. The best move set to have for Exeggutor is Bullet Seed and Frenzy Plant. Exeggutor is easily one of the best Grass-type Pokémon because of its strength and many trainers can attest to the power that this Pokémon has.

11. Shiftry

If you’re looking for another Pokémon with unique typing, you might want to consider using Shiftry. It’s a Grass-and Dark-type Pokémon that makes it a great match for Water and Ground-type Pokémon. Moreover, Shiftry has a CP of 2637 that packs a punch against its opponents. Shiftry might not be the strongest Grass-type Pokémon, but it’s one of the best for its strength, dual typing, and its overall stats.

12. Serperior

With a CP of 2574, Serperior packs a punch that you might not expect from a pure Grass-type Pokémon. Despite not having a dual-type, Serperior is capable of using Steel and Flying-type moves which makes it a great addition to your team. Serperior might not be as strong as Sceptile or Venusaur, but its ability to use Steel and Flying-type moves make it a formidable opponent in the field. It’s recommended that you have Vine Whip and Iron Tail in its move set because these are the ones that deal the most damage.

13. Virizion

Virizion is a Legendary Grass-type Pokémon that has a very low catch rate and a high flee rate. But if you’re lucky, it will be a great addition to your team. When using this Pokémon, you might want to consider that it’s mainly made for defense and not usually for offensive battles. Virizion has a CP of 3417  which packs a punch against its opponents. Zen Headbutt and Close Combat are usually the moves that trainers use to bring out the best in their Virizion.

Where to Find Grass-Type Pokémon

For the most part, Pokémon in Pokémon Go! can spawn anywhere at any time. However, if you’re looking to get a specific type of Pokémon, there are areas where they appear more frequently.

If you’re looking to find the best Grass-type Pokémon, your best bet is to look in areas where there are a lot of trees, flowers, or fields as these mimic plant life that resemble them. It’s easier for people who live in rural areas to access these Pokémon as they have a lot of natural areas around them.

If you’re far from an area with lots of plant life, your best alternative is to go to a park or a garden as they will spawn there as well. Golf courses are also great areas to check if you have access to one.

Bear in mind that there will be other types that will appear alongside the Grass-type Pokémon. It might get frustrating at first as these Pokémon might not spawn immediately, but everything will be worth the wait in the end.

In all, always keep an eye on the screen if you’re catching Pokemon as you might not know when the best Grass-type Pokémon might appear. Don’t forget to always be wary of your surroundings and to be careful when setting out to catch Pokémon.

Train Your First Grass-Type Pokémon
