How To Measure Internet Speed

Internet speed refers to the speed which data or content travels from the World Wide Web to your home computer, tablet, or smartphone. It is measured in terms of megabits (Mb) per second or “Mbps,” and 1 megabit is equal to 1,024 kilobits. There are three categories of measuring internet speed. They are the download speed, upload speed, and latency. Each of these categories has different purposes and functions.

Download Speed

It is the rate used to measure how long it would take to download a particular file. It is measured in Mbps. The higher the download speed, the better. However, files are not downloaded at the same time. They are downloaded one by one, so there’s a possibility of variation of download speed throughout the download process.

Upload Speed

It is the rate used to measure how fast it would take to upload a file to the Internet from a device. It is measured in Mbps. This is lower than the download speed. However, the higher the upload speed, the better. Uploading includes attaching files to an email and putting pictures on Facebook.

Latency

It refers to how quickly the information is moved across a network. This is commonly known as lag, and it is measured in milliseconds. The lower the latency, the better.
