Top 20 Action RPGs For Mobile

1. The World Ends With You

The World Ends With You

A Nintendo DS classic ported into mobile, The World Ends With You sends players into the bustling Shibuya Station, playing a dangerous game with your very existence on the line. Use various abilities and attacks in the form of collectible pins to overwhelm and defeat your enemies, discover your lost memories, the reason why you are a participant in this game, and find a way to get yourself out. All in all, this beloved DS port is one of the best Action RPG’s in Android.

There IS one caveat though, there’s some in app purchases in game in addition to initially purchasing the game. Other than that though, you can expect a fun time with The World Ends With You.

The World Ends With You is available for $14.99 with IAP’s on Google Play Store and Apple Appstore.

2. Postknight

Now if you’re gonna rag me in saying that Postknight is technically NOT an action RPG, hear me out first. The game’s mechanics are an RPG, with your role as the titular Postknight, you must deliver mail and materials all around it’s world while battling monsters along the way. The premise sounds like an action RPG which is why I count this in here.

All in all, the simplistic game style is something to adore and a joy to play. Honestly, play this. You won’t regret it.

Postknight is available for free with IAP’s on Google Play Store and Apple Appstore.

3. Evoland 1 and 2

Evoland 2

Evoland… isn’t that original if you think about it. After all, it borrowed quite a bit from other ARPG’s to create a classic RPG adventure that might be a bit of a knock-off, but it’s as fun game, and there’s a damn-good reason for its pilfering of the classics.

This game is all about the evolution of video games, starting you off with monochrome graphics and a 2D character. As you progress, you unlock new technologies and new graphics until you reach the modern, 3D/HD age.

If you love RPGs, no matter when they were made, then you’ll love Evoland and the sequel Evoland 2 which expands on the meta-narrative journey through video game history.

Evoland 1 and 2 is available for $0.99 and $5.99 respectively on Google Playstore.

4. Mount and Blade: Warband

Now here’s another port, this time from the PC. Mount and Blade is a PC masterpiece that made it’s way to the mobile platform and is honestly super underrated. The gameplay is superb, and the graphics straddle a thin line between great and functional, which is important in the smartphone space since there’s only so much graphics that it can properly render before lag comes a-knockin’.

You can expect the same polished gameplay from the original but fit in a mobile device and generally, a lot of fun while playing it.

Mount and Blade: Warband is available for $6.06 on Google Play Store and Apple Appstore.

5. Chrono Trigger

Another port from the days of old, Chrono Trigger is one of the best action RPGs ever created and some would say that the game pioneered the ARPG genre. But to be fair, this IS one of the oldest of the RPG’s on this list.

Chrono Trigger’s port into the mobile comes with a few quality of life changes, one of which is that the controls are optimized for the touchscreen, and a few graphical touch ups. But it’s still the OG Chrono Trigger that’s in the mobile.

If you want to experience the adventure again, then go get this now.

Chrono Trigger is available for $9.70 on Google Play Store.

6. Crashlands

Crashlands

Butterscotch Shenanigans makes some quirky and hilarious games and Crashlands is no exception. In what might be the most hilarious mobile RPG to date, you play as Flux Dabes, a space trucker who’s forced to crash-land (get it?) on an alien planet thanks to an alien jerk named Hewgodooko (And the names make me chortle, that’s a plus).

As you try to survive on this strange planet, you must craft your way through repairing your ship, build bases, tame wildlife to be your pets, and fight the locals while crafting weapons and items from their corpses (it sounds morbid, but it’s great).

If you love witty dialogue, a fun story, quirky games, and crafting over 468 items, then you should be playing Crashlands.

Crashlands is available for $4.99 in Google Playstore.

7. Baldur’s Gate I and II

If you’re a D&D fan like most people (That I know of), then you’re going to want the Baldur’s Gate games on your phone ASAP. They use a modified version of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition rules and the original Baldur’s Gate was credited with the computer RPG renaissance in 1998.

If you like a good old fashioned romp around a medieval realm, clearing dungeons and slaying beasts, defeating powerful enemies, all while creating potions and bettering your character, then the Baldur’s Gate games should be right up your alley.

Baldur’s Gate I and II are available for $9.99 each on Google Playstore.

8. Dragon Quest VIII

Dragon Quest VIII

Possibly the most popular game in the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is available for Android in all its cell-shaded beauty. It was the first widely released Dragon Quest title, being the first to hit the PAL region and the first to be called Dragon Quest in North America, where it was always called Dragon Warrior.

This is the full PS2 game, so it’s 1.4GB, taking up quite a bit of space on your phone. But you get everything the original has to offer: epic, turn-based battles, crafting via the Alchemy Pot, and classic fantasy, presented in a gorgeous 3D anime style. If you loved Dragon Quest VIII on PS2, you’ll love it on Android too.

Dragon Quest VIII is available for $19.99 on Google Play Store.

9. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

This is the full K.O.T.O.R. experience, so if you’re a Star Wars fan, this is definitely the mobile game you’re looking for. It’s a huge download, at 2.4GB, but you get all the force-wielding, lightsaber-swinging, Republic-saving goodness that the console games dazzled us with.

You get to choose your party from nine types of characters, travel to eight planets on the Ebon Hawk, and learn to use the Force, including over 40 powers. You also get to build your own lightsaber!

Knights of the Old Republic is the epitome of a classic Star Wars RPG and this port is totally worth the cash. This game even supports controllers if you prefer to play that way. As the Jedi’s last hope, you decide the fate of the galaxy as you battle your way to becoming a hero or falling to the temptation of the Dark Side.

Star Wars: KOTOR is available on Google Playstore for $9.99.

10. Eternium

Claiming to be the first RPG truly designed for controls, Mage and Minions is an excellent fantasy RPG that really does feel great to play. The controls are smooth and make sense to the mobile experience and the gameplay is fun and immersive.

If you’re looking for an RPG experience similar to dungeon crawlers like Diablo that was truly meant for mobile, then indulge in Eternium Mage and Minions.

Eternium is available for free with IAP’s on Google Playstore.

11. Arcane Quest 3

Arcane Quest 3 is a mobile RPG game for fans of classic tabletop games. It’s a turn-based RPG that mixes adventure, role-playing, and strategy elements to tell an epic story of revenge and redemption. You create your adventurer from your choice of 10 unique classes as you battle hordes of orcs and other undead enemies as you fight to restore the honor of your guild and save your people.

There are hours of gameplay to be had there that’s sure to please the hardcore RPG gamer and all without implementing a pay-to-win mechanic. Definitely worth checking out for any RPG fans looking for a new time sink!

Arcane Quest 3 is available for free with IAP’s on Google Playstore.

12. Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy

Another classic series gets the port to the Android for almost ALL of their old lineup from OG Final Fantasy all the way to Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy Dimensions and Tactics and their ARPG Gacha Game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. They skipped VIII though (which is sad), but you’ll be able to play almost ALL of the OG Final Fantasy games on your mobile. Which is pretty worth it.

The few things that mar the whole thing is that some of the games being ported aren’t really ported properly, the HUGE memory chunk that will disappear from your phone when you download them, and that the games are sold separately.

Other than that, the games will take you back on memory lane and will surely make you want to finish them all over again.

Final Fantasy I through VII and IX as well as Tactics and Dimensions are available on Google Play Store with prices ranging from $2 to $19.99. Brave Exvius is available for free with IAP’s on Google Play Store.

13. BattleChasers: NightWar

BattleChasers: NightWar is an award-winning JRPG that offers one of the most complete mobile RPG experience you’ll play in 2019 — and that’s complete in the sense that there’s no in-app purchases or paid DLC to worry about. Hallelujah!

Everything about this game is polished and complete, and it starts with a robust overworld that’s filled with hidden dungeons to explore, epic bosses to take down, and other surprises along the way.

The turn-based combat is inspired by all the favorites you remember from the JRPG genre and is a real treat even for a casual fan like myself. Along with the dense and sprawling world to explore that’s teeming with enemies to do battle with, there’s also deep crafting elements as well for upgrading your team’s weapons, armors, and magical jewelry. An RPG is only as good as its story and characters, and given that this game is based on a graphic novel of the same name we’re given fully developed characters and a compelling story.

Honestly, if you want a modern spin to the classic ARPG formula, then this game’s for you.

BattleChasers: NIghtWar is available for $9.99 on Google Playstore.

14. Battleheart Legacy

Now fans of the original Battleheart will be glad to know that the developers made a sequel. And the sequel is pretty awesome. With improved graphics, and an actual story mode, the game is poised to be one of the best ARPG’s out there.

Battleheart Legacy is available for $4.99 on Google Playstore.

15. Secret of Mana

Yet another port for the Android and a golden classic, Secret of Mana is one of those games that stood the test of time and is considered one of the best action RPGs out there. It features a top down real time battle system akin to other action role playing games such as Legend of Zelda that at the time was a large shift from the turn based fare that Square created. Even today Square Enix does not foray too often into the action role playing genre, making for a unique experience when it comes to Square created titles.

Seriously, if you haven’t played it yet, consider picking it up for your smartphone.

Secret of Mana is available for $9.00 in Google Play Store.

16. Dungeon Hunter 5

The Dungeon Hunter series by Gameloft are almost a mainstay for the android smartphone for a long time now, and with their 5th installment, they aim to continue that tradition. Featuring some quality of life changes and several new additions to the original Dungeon Hunter formula, the 5th iteration of Dungeon Hunter promises to be a treat.

Just… mind the microtransactions and random ads yeah?

Dungeon Hunter 5 is free with IAP’s on Google Playstore.

17. Dungeon Quest

Continuing the Dungeon themed exploration mechanics popularized by earlier titles, Dungeon Quest doesn’t really do anything with the OG formula but it DOES give a gameplay loop that anyone can pick up and enjoy. There IS the issue of the excessive advertisements and microtransactions but overall, the game’s one of the better action RPGs out there.

Dungeon Quest is available for free with IAP’s on Google Playstore.

18. Reaper

Reaper is one of those games that you get for free. But only the trial version of it. The game offers an incredible journey that has to be experienced to believe. With quirky characters, great visuals, and a cool soundtrack, Reaper is one of those hidden gems out there.

Reaper is available for free with IAP’s on Google Play Store.

19. Quadropus Rampage

Now here’s a treat for the ones looking for a bit of a challenge. Quadropus Rampage is an ARPG bullet hell roguelike. Yep. You heard me. This game is a mishmash of 3 game genres in one and is quite possibly one of the best games in these genres in android. Now don’t get us wrong, there’s still microtransactions here. But you’ll still have fun playing the game. Which is saying something.

Quadropus Rampage is available for free with IAP’s on Google Playstore.
