Dragons! Dragons have long been the symbol of strength, power, and majesty. Even in the Pokémon series, you can see that trend with the best dragon-type Pokémon also being legendary or semi-legendary Pokémon. From Pokémon Emerald’s Rayquaza to the newer legendaries like Zekrom, Kyurem, and Eternatus, dragon Pokémon are some of the strongest you can get in any Pokémon game! Due to that fact, even Pokémon Go has dragon Pokémon among its heaviest hitters. To help you pick which one to raise among them, we present this list of the best dragon-type Pokémon!

What Are Dragon-Type Pokémon?
As we said earlier, most of the 61 dragon-type Pokémon are legendary. Whether they are pure dragon-type or dual primary or secondary dragon-type Pokémon, they only count as 6.77% of all Pokémon up to the eighth generation, including mega evolutions and Alolan forms. Although they’re only the fifth most populous Pokémon type, dragon-type Pokémon are considered as some of the strongest Pokémon out there. This strength is reflected even in Pokémon Go, with most of them having higher than usual maximum combat power (CP) compared to others. A good chunk of them also has max CP upwards of 3,000, with Mega Ampharos taking the top at an overwhelming 4799 max CP.
While dragon-type attacks may not have status ailments like poison, fire, or ice Pokémon attacks, they do have the advantage of having almost no weaknesses. Dragon-type moves are only super effective against other dragon-types, but they’re only resisted by steel and fairy-type Pokémon. On the other hand, a defending dragon-type Pokémon would only need to fear dragon, fairy, and ice-type attacks. They’re also quite resistant to fire, grass, water, and electric-type Pokémon.

The 15 Best Dragon-Type Pokémon in Pokémon Go!
This listing of the best dragon-type Pokémon is filled with mostly legendary or semi-legendary. All of these legendary Pokémon can only be obtained through a five-star raid battle.
For others on this list, like Mega Ampharos, they can be evolved from earlier Pokémon in their evolutionary lines. If you want to catch those Pokémon, you’ll have to take your luck in public parks, city districts, and going out on windy days. Sadly, there are no specific lures to lead them to PokéStops or exact places to find them.

Mega Ampharos is the best dragon-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go with its domineering strength. It is stronger than most other legendary Pokémon, even the popular Zekrom, Reshiram, and Dialga. Because of its dual electric-dragon type, Mega Ampharos is resistant to flying and steel-type Pokémon attacks in addition to the usual dragon-type resistances. However, this characteristic also gives Mega Ampharos an additional vulnerability to ground-type attacks.
Even with all of its strength, Mega Ampharos is only a temporary evolution that usually lasts eight hours. Like with any “mega” evolution, you’ll need to use 200 Mega Energy to evolve it for the first time and another 40 energy for succeeding times. To get this energy, you’ll have to raid-battle a Mega Ampharos and win. If you already have the required energy, the next step is to get an Ampharos to evolve. To do that, you’ll have to catch a Mareep and feed it 25 candies to get Flaafy. You’ll then need to feed your Flaafy 100 candy to get an Ampharos.

The first legendary Pokémon on this list, Zekrom, hails from the fifth generation’s Unova region and is the “twin” of Reshiram. A dual dragon-electric type Pokémon, it is resistant to electric, steel, and flying-type Pokémon. Its cracking combat power also doubles its attractiveness to any player wanting a dragon Pokémon on their lineup. However, you should still be wary when going against Landorus, Groudon, and the likes because of its low defense against ground-type attacks.
As we said earlier, you can only get Zekrom and other legendary Pokémon through a five-star raid battle. Due to its already superior stats as a normal Pokémon, you’ll have to be fully prepared and come up with not just a good Pokémon team but other trainers to challenge Zekrom.
3. Reshiram

Reshiram is the other side of the Tao Trio that has almost the same statistics as Zekrom. The main difference between the two is their dual-typing. While Zekrom is a dragon-electric type, Reshiram is a dragon-fire type Pokémon. The most traditional Pokémon typing for people used to “western” dragons, Reshiram’s types give it additional vulnerabilities to rock and ground type damage. It does, however, give Reshiram resistance to steel-type and bug-type Pokémon attacks. Reshiram only loses its resistance to water damage. Similar to Zekrom, you’ll have to go on a five-star raid battle to get a chance to obtain Reshiram.

Dialga is another legendary Pokémon, this time from the fourth generation’s Sinnoh region. It has pretty similar statistics to Zekrom and Reshiram, only it’s a steel-dragon type Pokémon instead. Although its typing makes it weak to fighting and ground-type moves, it is exceptionally resistant to flying, rock, normal, bug, steel, water, electric, psychic, poison, and grass-type moves. While you may think the type advantages would make it stronger than Zekrom and Reshiram, the damage per second or DPS of its attacks make it slightly weaker than the other two. As with any other legendary Pokémon, you’ll only get one if you’re lucky enough to obtain it through a raid battle.

The second legendary Pokémon from the Sinnoh region and the partner to Dialga, Palkia is another strong dual-type Pokémon. Only slightly weaker than the previous three legendary Pokémon, this water-dragon type Pokémon is resistant and effective against common Pokémon types namely steel, fire, and water. When carrying it, you only have to be on the lookout for dragon and fairy-type Pokémon.

The first normal Pokémon in this list, Garchomp is one of the best dragon-type Pokémon because of its sheer combat power. Although its ground-dragon characteristic makes it weak to ice-type Pokémon as well as Fairy and Dragon, it also has resistance to some of the most intimidatingPokémon types. Garchomp keeps its resistance to fire and electric attacks, in addition to poison and rock-type resistance due to its ground second-type.
A literal land shark, Garchomp, also comes from the fourth generation’s Sinnoh region. The second evolution of Gible, Garchomp is fairly strong and has the potential for a mega evolution once it is implemented in Pokémon Go. While it is rarely found in the wild, as field rewards, or in a raid battle, it is far easier to get a Garchomp by slowly evolving it. You’ll first have to get a Gible and give it 25 candies. After that, your Gabite only needs 100 candies to evolve into Garchomp.
7. Mega X Charizard

Although Mega X Charizard is just a “temporary” timed evolution in the game, it remains one of the best dragon-type Pokémon you’ll ever get. This particular Pokémon has two types, a Mega X and a Mega Y version. However, the Mega X version is the only one that is a dragon-type. Similar to other fire-dragon Pokémon, it is weak to ground, rock, and dragon-type attacks. But it has monstrous resistance to a bug, steel, electric, fire, and grass-type Pokémon.
To achieve a mega evolution, you have to have both a Charizard and 200 Mega X energy. Although it’s a temporary evolution, you will have to get a Charizard for yourself. To get one, you’ll have an easier time catching a Charmander and slowly evolving it instead. You have to feed Charmander 25 candies to get a Charmeleon. Then you’ll feed it 100 candies to get a Charizard.
8. Rayquaza

A third-generation legendary Pokémon, Rayquaza is the promoted cover Pokémon for Pokémon Emerald. A dual dragon-flying type, Rayquaza has added resistance against fighting and bug-type Pokémon aside from the normal dragon-type resistances. Its only great weakness is ice-type moves in addition to the usual vulnerabilities of its type. Since it is a legendary pokémon, you’ll have to try your luck at getting it through a high-level raid battle.

Another legendary Pokémon from the third generation’s Hoenn region, Latios is the twin Pokémon to Latias. Although Latios is the stronger of the two, its dual Pokémon types make it vulnerable to six different Pokémon types. These types are bug, ghost, ice, dragon, dark, and fairy attack moves. The good news is it also adds fighting and psychic move resistances. If you want one of these, you’ll have to get a Latios through a raid battle as with all other legendary Pokémon.

Dragonite is a second evolution Pokémon that is a combination of a dragon and flying-type. It has similar type weaknesses and strengths to Rayquaza. It is good to point out, though, that Dragonite was originally one of the few dragon-type Pokémon in the game when it was first released as part of the first generation of Pokémon.
Considered as a semi-legendary Pokémon, even during the newer games, Dragonite is one of the most popular Pokémon out there. Ash also had his own Dragonite that only strengthened its popularity. We’re sure you want one for yourself too, so instead of praying on the rare chance to catch one in the wild or during raid battles, you would give yourself an easier time if you evolve one from Dratini instead. After getting one, you have to feed it 25 candies to get a Dragonair. You’ll then only need another 100 candies to get Dragonite.

Salamence is a fan favorite Pokémon that is quite similar to Dragonite. Although slightly weaker, Salamence can be considered as a partner to Dragonite since it is a western dragon. It has an impressive resistance to grass and ground-type attacks that is why it’s a good mainstay to most high-level teams.
Bagon, the second evolution of Salamence, also has the potential to mega evolve to Mega Salamence after it is implemented in Pokémon Go. Those wanting one can evolve it from Bagon using 25 candy to get a Shelgon. You’ll need a further 100 candy to evolve it to Salamence.

Another legendary Pokémon, this time from the fourth generation’s Sinnoh region, Giratina is a contemporary of Dialga and Palkia. Giratina is also the title Pokémon for Pokémon Platinum. A unique ghost-dragon dual-type Pokémon, it has additional resistances to poison, bug, normal, and fighting-type attacks. Be careful, though, because Giratina fares badly with ghost, ice, dragon, dark, and fairy-type moves.
Although it may look like an overgrown centipede in any form, we chose Giratina’s Origin form due to its higher max combat power compared to the altered or normal form. You’ll have to go on a raid battle spree to have a chance of getting Giratina since it is a legendary Pokémon.

Hydreigon is an odd and unique mix of dark and dragon Pokémon. Its types make it doubly weak to Fairy-type Pokémon and normally weak to fighting, bug, ice, and dragon moves. However, this typing also makes it resistant to ghost, dark, and psychic moves in addition to the normal dragon-type resistances.
Considered a pseudo-legendary Pokémon, Hydreigon can be evolved from a Deino. This is a great alternative to trying to capture one in the wild. Since it is the second evolution of Deino, you’ll have to feed Deino 25 candies to get a Zweilous and then feed that another 100 candies to get Hydreigon.

Haxorus is surprisingly the very first pure dragon-type Pokémon on this list. Due to its single type, it has all the weaknesses and resistances that dragon-type Pokémon have. Aside from this, you can consider Haxorus as the fifth generation’s version of Salamence and Dragonite.
A Pokémon from the fifth generation’s Unova region, Haxorus, can be obtained by evolving Axew. You’ll first need to feed it 25 candy to get a Fraxure. You’ll then need 100 more candy to get Haxorus.

The very last dragon-type Pokémon with a max CP in the 4,000’s range as of October 2021, Kyurem is a rare dual dragon-ice type Pokémon. Due to this, it has weaknesses to fighting, rock, steel, dragon, and fairy-type moves. Due to also being an ice-type, it loses its resistance to fire-type attacks. While Kyurem may be considered quite strong because of its high combat power, when compared to other legendary dragon-type Pokémon, it is one of the weaker ones. This may change, though, once Niantic introduces Kyurem’s Black and White forms, which are expected to much much stronger than its normal form.
Potential Future Dragon-Type Pokémon

From the mega evolutions to alternate forms of some Pokémon, this list will update as new Pokémon generations are released.
We hope you’ve found yourself at least one Pokémon from this list to add to your team. Test them on the actual game and download Pokémon Go on Play Store or App Store.
