What is It Takes Two?

Originally released on March 2021 to Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox X/S platforms, It Takes Two is the brainchild of film director and game designer Josef Fares. Made by Fares’ Hazelight Studios and published by EA, It Takes Two has the same artistic and gameplay direction seen in Fares’ other games. This means that it has a lot of different genres like action-adventure, puzzle-solving, platformer, and third-person shooter. The game also plays as either a single-player or a multiplayer co-op game with a story-driven plot.

Its plot is quite simple, with a story focused on a husband (Cody) and wife (May) whose relationship is on the rocks and who are planning a divorce. All the while, their daughter Rose wants them to make up and takes dolls that look like her parents to the shed to roleplay them patching things up. Things then take a magical turn when they wake up as Rose’s dolls. While unsure what to do, their relationship therapy book appears and tells them that they can only return to normal after they fix their relationship.

Best Games like It Takes Two

Now that we have explained what It Takes Two is all about, we are going to go ahead and move on to the list of games like It Takes Two on Android and iOS. Due to the myriad of genres and features the game has, no one game has everything that It Takes Two has. Instead, we will list and highlight the strengths of the games we chose in comparison to It Takes Two. Aside from that, we will also note what platforms they are on, their price, and their age rating. Without further ado, here’s our list for the 15 games like It Takes Two!

1. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Developer: 505 Games

Genre: Action, Adventure, Platformer, Story-driven, Puzzle, Co-Op

Age Rating: Teen 12+

Platform: Android and iOS

The first game on our list and the most similar game It Takes Two is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. The main reason for this choice is that this game is actually Josef Fares’ first foray into video games. It’s the first game to feature Fares’ directorial talent and vision as well as his preference for creating story-driven co-op games. Due to this, Brothers feels and plays a lot like It Takes Two, although a bit more restrained when it comes to the abundance of features.

Instead of a plot revolving around a squabbling married couple, this game stars the two titular brothers – Naiee and Naia instead. The game’s plot revolves around the two searching for a MacGuffin, water from the Tree of Life that they need to save their father from a deathly illness. To get it, they have to travel a long way through puzzling roads and dangerous mountains.

2. Journey

Developer: Annapurna Interactive

Genre: Action, Adventure, Platformer, Exploration, Puzzle, Co-Op

Age Rating: Everyone 4+

Platform: iOS

Although originally created as a PlayStation 3 game, Journey was released to iOS in 2019. The second game on our list of games like It Takes Two, Journey is a game dedicated to bringing you an unforgettable story without a single word. A little different from Fares’ directorial style, this game instead has everything centered on your journey. This journey will take you on a path through a visually stunning and sand-covered world. Overall, the game plays out as a fun exploration game with the goal of getting to a far-off mountaintop.

While mainly single-player, there are times when the game connects you and another random player elsewhere in the world through the Apple Game Center. This game also only works on iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and above, iPad 5th Gen and above, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4, iPad Mini (2019), and all iPad Pro devices.

3. Sky: Children of Light

Developer: Thatgamecompany Inc.

Genre: Adventure, Platformer, Puzzle

Age Rating: Everyone 10+

Platform: Android and iOS

The third game on this list comes from the same creators of Journey. Tagged as a “social adventure” game, Sky: Children of Light continues the same ideas and themes introduced in Journey. The game wants you to explore a brand new world — this time, in a kingdom that is flying high in the sky.

As an MMORPG, the game has a lot of stories to tell, but its main plot is simple. You are one of the Children of Light, whose mission is to one day fill the fallen stars back into the night sky to bring light back into the world. Compared to other games like It Takes Two, Sky is a live-service multiplayer game, but it still has the same focus on adventuring with your friends on an emotional journey through a different world.

4. Little Misfortune

Developer: Killmonday Games

Genre: Adventure, Platformer, Story-driven

Age Rating: Mature 17+

Platform: Android and iOS

Little Misfortune is a casual game from the creators of the Fran Bow series. At first glance, Little Misfortune is an odd choice to add to a list of games like It Takes Two, but hear us out. While it may not have the myriad of game genres It Takes Two has, or even the cinematic quality that Journey has, Little Misfortune does have a wonderful and emotional plot about life and living; a plot that we can compare to It Takes Two’s story about relationships and marriage. While we cannot say much about it without spoiling you, we can say that the power of an eight-year-old’s imagination cannot be underestimated.

The gameplay is pretty simple and works a lot like Sierra Entertainment’s old point-and-click mystery adventure games in the early 90s. You guide Misfortune in her weird world as you make choices for her and find a way to get the Eternal Happiness she wants to give to her mother.

7. Very Little Nightmares

Very Little Nightmares is a spin-off of the popular Little Nightmares game series by Tarsier Studios. Made as a prequel to the two main series games, Very Little Nightmares’ story shows Six before she was captured. Very Little Nightmares is still a puzzle adventure game that is both cute and horrifying.

Still starring our yellow raincoat-wearing friend, your goal is to explore, survive, and finally escape the mansion that you wake up in. The game continues the series’ strong points of confusing and challenging you with harder and harder rooms and puzzles. Overall, even without a multi-player element, Very Little Nightmares is one of the best games like It Takes Two out there!

8. Badland

Developer: Frogmind

Genre: Adventure, Puzzle, Co-op

Age Rating: Everyone 9+

Platform: Android and iOS

Badland is another unique choice for our list of games like It Takes Two, mainly because it is a side-scrolling game instead of a normal platformer. While a bit old, since it was released in 2013, the game still holds up against modern games. Aside from having a level editor, cloud saves, and controller support, the game also features multiplayer and co-operative modes that allow up to four players in one game!

While it plays similarly to other side-scrolling games, its main draw is its unique grim and dark art style combined with its threateningly sharp background music. Overall, the game is a fun one that lets you and your friends repeatedly learn and die together.

Developer: Eric Froemling

Genre: Action, Platformer, Co-op

What would happen if you made a modern game by combining Worms and Bomberman? The answer is probably something like BombSquad. These modes include capture the flag, king of the hill, bomber hockey, and slow-mo elimination.

The game’s premise is simple, be the last one standing after bombing, punching, and jumping over your friends. There are no permanent allies and no true enemies as you and your friends unlock 15 different characters to play with as you bomb each other to victory.

10. Meltdown

Developer: Phenomenon Games

Genre: Action, Platformer

Age Rating: Everyone 10+

Platform: Android

Meltdown is another game that is more than a bit different than other games like It Takes Two. This time, that difference is due to Meltdown being a hack and slash game. More of an arcade game than a hardcore one, Meltdown advertises itself as a “Tactical Arcade Action” game that is more shoot and slash than hack and slash.

The main reason this game is on this list is due to its really fun and interactive cooperative player mode. This lets you and four of your friends rain down bullet hell into your enemies in 30 different randomly generated levels while you clear the game!

11. Bendy and the Ink Machine

Developer: Joey Drew Studios

Genre: Adventure, Action, Platformer, Puzzle

Age Rating: Teen

Platform: Android and iOS

Bendy and the Ink Machine is a game with its own fun art style made to imitate the 1930s era of silent and film noir movies. Although it feels closer to games like Cuphead, we are considering Bendy and the Ink Machine as a game like It Takes Two due to its compelling story-rich plotline and world-building.

The game plays like an odd mix of platformer, dungeon crawler, and puzzle game in the first-person view. Its plot has you invited by Joey Drew himself to explore the now run-down Joey Drew Studios in a journey into a twisted and grotesque cartoon nightmare.

12. Among Us

Among Us is a game that does not really need any introduction, but we will do it anyway. Among Us is an action and social-deduction game that pits four to up to fifteen players in a murderous mystery game. While we do have a full review of Among Us, we want to explain how it was placed in our list of games like It Takes Two.

As Among Us is in a completely different genre altogether, we have considered the multiplayer aspect and player cooperation inherent in this social-deduction game as the reason to add it to this list. While it may not have the in-depth plot or the wondrous graphics of It Takes Two, Among Us fills the same idea of helping friends and family get closer together through gaming.

Developer: Artifex Mundi

Genre: Adventure, Puzzle

Age Rating: Everyone 3+

Platform: Android and iOS

A visually stunning game, My Brother Rabbit is from the point and click game creator Artifex Mundi. Although it does mostly play as a point-and-click adventure game, it is a bit more than that. Similar to Little Misfortune, My Brother Rabbit is played through the eyes of a child, a young girl, and her brother in this case.

While exploring the world through their imagination and solving the puzzles and problems within, you are drawn into the game’s creatively drawn world. Overall, My Brother Rabbit is a fun puzzle game that has more than its fair share of intriguing mini-games and a story that will leave you scratching your head at the end.

One of the best open-world games to ever be created, we are including Minecraft as the very last game on the list mostly due to its multi-player and co-op features that let you and your friends create your own stories to play and live out.

While it may be a bit too different from It Takes Two, the same spirit of camaraderie and friendship is still part of the game. From creating your own group’s houses to exploring real-life locations like Disney World, you and your group will find something worthwhile to do.

Other Odds and Ends

And with that, we have finished our list of games like It Takes Two. You have probably noticed that there are not a lot of games that are almost exactly like it on Android or iOS. This is mostly because it is pretty rare to find an action-adventure game focused on telling a good story with an actual film director at the helm.

While there are not a lot of action-adventure smartphone games that do have this cinematic flair, a lot of the best JRPGs also do. Other MMORPGs like Genshin Impact also have a knack for storytelling and world-building.
