uPhone’s two 1 GB offers are different products: the uPhone free eSIM trial is a 3-day membership trial that requires a card and can be canceled before day 3 to avoid a charge, while the uPhone free eSIM referral reward is a 1 GB bonus earned after 10 qualifying referrals and does not require a card to sign up. The trial is tied to Test Flight membership pricing and auto-renews at $9.99/month unless canceled; the referral reward is issued after the referral threshold is met and is documented as valid for 30 days from activation.
What each offer is
The trial is described as a real 1 GB data eSIM for any of 100+ countries, available free for 3 days as part of Test Flight membership. uPhone says users can claim the test eSIM from the dashboard, scan a QR code, and use it on their own phone over a live network. The referral offer is a separate 1 GB eSIM reward for users who refer friends into uPhone eSIM plans; uPhone says every 10 qualifying referrals earns another free 1 GB eSIM.
Card requirements and auto-renewal
The trial page says users must enter a card at sign-up, but they will not be charged during the 3-day trial window. It also says to cancel within 3 days to pay nothing, and that keeping the membership continues at $9.99/month. The referral page says creating a free uPhone account does not require a credit card.
- Trial: card required at sign-up.
- Trial: no charge if canceled within 3 days.
- Trial: continues as a $9.99/month Test Flight membership if not canceled.
- Referral reward: no credit card required to create the account.
Qualification rules
To qualify for the trial, the user signs up, starts the 3-day Test Flight trial, and claims the free 1 GB test eSIM from the dashboard. uPhone says the trial eSIM can be used in any of 100+ countries.
To qualify for the referral reward, uPhone says a referral counts when someone clicks the unique referral link, creates a uPhone account, verifies their email, and completes a purchase of any eSIM plan that meets the minimum spend. uPhone says the reward is issued after 10 qualifying referrals, and each set of 10 qualifying referrals earns another 1 GB reward.
Installation and activation
uPhone says the trial eSIM is delivered by email with a QR code. On iPhone, the page instructs users to go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the code. On Android, uPhone says the path is Settings → Network or Connections → SIMs → Add eSIM, noting that menu names vary by brand. The trial page says activation takes about 2 minutes.
The referral page does not document a separate installation flow beyond issuing the 1 GB eSIM after the reward is claimed.
Apple, Pixel, and Samsung behavior
For iPhone, Apple's international eSIM guidance says the iPhone must be connected to Wi‑Fi or a hotspot to activate in general, though in some countries or regions eSIM-only iPhone models can activate without Wi‑Fi. Apple also says travelers can buy prepaid plans from carrier websites or apps before travel, and choose whether to use a Travel eSIM only or a Travel eSIM and Current eSIM, with the travel eSIM used for data when both lines are enabled.
For Pixel, Google's Pixel eSIM guidance says to go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and tap Add SIM, then choose Download a SIM instead. It also says some carriers may not allow dual SIM with one physical SIM and one eSIM, and that if the phone is carrier locked, the carrier decides eSIM support.
uPhone’s pages do not document Samsung-specific setup steps. They do say the Android flow varies by brand, so Samsung users should expect the menu labels on-device to differ from the iPhone path and may need to follow the Samsung device’s cellular or SIM settings.
Carrier locks and travel-data choices
Apple says international roaming with an eSIM works the same as roaming with a physical SIM, and that some countries or regions may be included in a home plan. It also says travelers can use a prepaid plan purchased before travel or after arrival, and that carriers provide the digital activation steps. For users choosing between home roaming and a travel eSIM, Apple says the travel eSIM can be set as the data line when both lines are active.
Google says carrier-locked Pixels depend on the carrier for eSIM support, and that dual-SIM behavior can vary by carrier. uPhone’s documentation does not add carrier-lock rules of its own.
Bottom line
The two offers serve different use cases. The trial is the faster way to test a 1 GB eSIM on a phone before committing, but it requires a card and rolls into a paid membership unless canceled. The referral reward is a post-purchase bonus earned after 10 qualifying referrals, with no card needed to create the account and a 30-day validity once activated.
