Game developer Jagex has announced that two RuneScape spin-off games will make a debut this 2022. In a press release, Jagex said that they are collaborating with Steamforged Games to create a board game and tabletop roleplaying game (TTRG) set in Gielinor.
Furthermore, Jagex states the “board game launching on Kickstarter and the TTRPG heading straight to stores.”
RuneScape is a popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game for PC, Mac, and mobile, which continues to gain loyal followers. It’s also one of the longest-running video games as of this writing. Its partnership with tabletop-gaming powerhouse Steamforged Games will open a new era for RuneScape after more than 21 years of being exclusively available digitally.
RuneScape Spin-Offs Development
Jagex is a leader in creating deep and engaging live games. In a press release, Jagex teases fans will surely dive into these two new spin-off games. The developers believe these spin-offs will also be embraced by RuneScape and Old School RuneScape’s fans around the world. Furthermore, the undertaking is exciting not just for the fans but the developers themselves.
In a statement, Jagex CEO Phil Mansell said “it’s extremely exciting to be collaborating with Steamforged to create and deliver new RuneScape role-playing adventures to tabletop gamers.”
Meanwhile, Steamforged Games Creative Director and CCO Mat Hart said they will give justice to RuneScape by ensuring the game gets translated properly into a board game and TTRPG.
Hart also adds fans around the world will have a say in the development of the game. Jagex and Steamforged Games launched a survey website for fans to throw in their ideas and pitches as to what they want to see in the games. In addition, fans can participate in a lucky draw for a chance to win one of five $100 Amazon vouchers. The survey period ends on 6 February 2022.
RuneScape TTRPG and Board Gameplays
It’s hard to concretely predict how RuneScape will translate into a board game and a TTRPG in terms of gameplay. However, Jagex hints the games will draw the majority of the elements from the RuneScape universe.
“TTRPG will consist of a lavishly illustrated, hardback core book containing rules for players to run a RuneScape tabletop roleplaying game,” Jagex says in a press release. Additionally, fans can expect full customization control such as the ability to “build their own characters, explore Gielinor, and create unique and exciting quests.”
Meanwhile, the board game spin-off is playable between one to five players on quest-based campaigns through Gielinor. Jagex says players will have plenty of fun with this spin-off. There will also be a variety of enticing side quests to distract and entertain them on the way.
