What Is a Wireless Charger?
A wireless charger is a device that can transfer power from a wired power source to a device wirelessly. A special charging pad or port plugs into an electrical socket to harvest electricity. It then transfers that power to the device via a small contact point on the device’s exterior. Note that the setup isn’t completely wireless since the charging device still plugs into a wall socket. The difference lies in the manner in which the charging device powers up the external device, and in this case, it happens through electromagnetic induction.
Electromagnetic induction may seem like a foreign concept to most people, but it’s been around for a long time. It’s been available since the early 1990s in electric toothbrushes and for surgically implanted devices (e.g., artificial hearts). We’ve even heard about it in pop culture in the late 1800s with the invention of the Tesla coil. So why are we only hearing of wireless chargers now? That’s because there was no demand for it until cellular phones came along.
Wireless chargers come in different shapes and sizes, but the two specific forms that they take include a charging pad or charging stand. A charging pad is usually a simple device that sits flat on top of any surface, while a stand has an inclined base that allows your device to sit in a vertical position. Some devices offer a combination of pads and a stand, and it’s not unusual to find a device that can charge multiple devices simultaneously. Nowadays, you can also find wireless chargers that you can mount on cars.

Best Wireless Chargers for Mobile Phones
There is a growing market for wireless chargers, and each company tries to produce a charger with a distinctive design. There are wireless charging pads, stands, and battery packs to choose from. Some devices charge a single device, while others charge multiple devices. To help you find the right fit for your needs, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular and highly-rated wireless chargers.
The Belkin Boost Up Wireless Charging Stand is a simple yet efficient device that can charge your phones wirelessly. It has a sister device that has the exact same charging plate, except without the stand. The device is part of the second lineup of wireless chargers to be released by Belkin.
The charger’s white, circular charging plate was propped up on a plastic stand. The plate itself is about 20% smaller than the original Belkin wireless charger. The front portion of the plate is made with a matte-type material, while the sides of the charger are made up of a smoother plastic material. On the side of the charger is a single LED light that lights up different colors.
Underneath the charging plate is a plastic stand designed to support the device both in a horizontal or vertical position. The charging pad is permanently attached to the stand, meaning it’s not possible to disassemble the setup.
Charging Capabilities
Belkin advertises a charging speed of 10W (watts), which is the higher threshold for most Android devices. However, it only charges iPhones at a rate of 7.5W. It charges devices through electromagnetic induction.
Compatibility
The Boost Up Wireless Charging Stand is compatible with most Qi-enabled Android devices. It also works with Apple devices, but it’s not as efficient at charging these devices compared to Android.
Accessories
The Belkin Boost Up Wireless Charging pad comes with its own 22.5W adapter and power cord. The power cord plugs into the lower back of the charging pad at one end and to the adapter at the other end.
The Apple MagSafe charger is one of the most popular wireless chargers in the world. Apple redesigned the MagSafe after the release of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. Originally, the MagSafe could only work with Macbooks, but the latest design allows it to work with iPhones.
The charger has a circular magnetic puck that is about two inches in diameter. The puck itself has a white plastic casing protected at the edges by a silver metal rim. The underside of the puck clasps onto the back casing of iPhones. Located on the side of the puck is a circular port that connects to a meter-long Lightning cable. In turn, the cable connects to an adaptor that you’re supposed to plug into a wall socket.
Charging Capabilities
The MagSafe can charge a typical iPhone at a speed of 15W. At this rate, it would take about an hour for your iPhone to charge at 50 percent battery capacity. However, suppose you have a Lightning-based accessory (i.e., EarPods) connected to your device. In that case, the charging rate will decrease to about 7.5W.
Take note that MagSafe is a separate charging protocol from Qi. The differences between these two protocols have a direct implication on how fast your Apple devices can charge. Essentially, only a MagSafe charger or MagSafe-compatible charger can get you a 15W charging capacity. While Qi chargers can still power up your Apple devices, they will take longer due to the reduced output.
Compatibility
The Apple MagSafe charger is compatible with the latest iPhones and AirPods. Specifically, it works with iPhone 8 models onwards and with the original AirPods, AirPods Max, and AirPods Pro. However, only the latest iPhones (iPhone 12 onwards) are able to latch perfectly onto the Apple MagSafe, thanks to the magnetic alignment feature.
Accessories
The MagSafe package contains a single magnetic puck and Lightning cable. It doesn’t come with a power adaptor due to Apple’s efforts to become more environment-friendly. Apple does offer a recommendation for the adapter, and they say it should be at least a 20W USB-C type adaptor.
Logitech has released several products under their Powered lineup throughout the years. But its 3-in-1 charging dock is perhaps the most notable and innovative product to come out of that lineup. As you can probably tell from its name, the 3-in-1 charging dock can simultaneously charge up to three devices. The three types of devices it can charge are Qi-compatible smartphones, wireless earbuds, and smartwatches.
The Logitech 3-in-1 charging dock has a rectangular metal base about the size of a small jewelry plate. The left portion of the charging dock is a plain, flat space meant to charge your wireless earbuds. Meanwhile, the right portion of the plate contains a slight depression on which a metal stand is wedged. The stand holds up two charging stations, one for your smartphone and another for your smartwatch.
Charging Capabilities
Each of the three charging stations has its own charging capacity. The maximum rate offered by both the charging dock and the charging pad is 10W. On the other hand, you have the smartwatch pad, which can charge at a far slower rate of 5W.
However, we need to note that the actual rate for charging is only ever as good as the maximum capacity of the device being charged. Case in point, iPhones can only accept a maximum of 7.5W, while AirPods can only accept a maximum of 5W. Even Android devices have their limitations that can support anywhere between 5 to 10W. Only very few devices currently support 15W.
Compatibility
The Logitech 3-in1 charging dock works any device that supports Qi wireless charging. In other words, it works with most of the latest models from popular brands such as Apple, Google, LG, Samsung, Lenovo, and so on.
Accessories
The Logitech 3-in-1 charging dock comes with its own cable and AC adaptor. The AC adaptor is frankly quite bulky, but it should plug right into your standard wall socket.
The NANAMI Wireless Charger is an affordable, lightweight, and no-nonsense type of charger. This charger has a relatively simple design, with a lightweight, rectangular charging base with a small ledger at the bottom to cradle your phone.
The stand itself is slanted backward at just the right angle to keep your device from falling off. The angle at which the stand is tilted is also intended to make it easier for you to use your phone as it charges. You can easily open and navigate apps, type text, and even answer calls while it’s in this position.
The small ledge near the bottom of the charging base contains a LED indicator that flashes multiple colors to indicate different things. For example, a green light indicates that the device is charging, while a blue light indicates that it’s on standby mode. The LED indicator will let you know if the device is not charging due to improper placement on the charger.
The internal design of the charger is worth noting too. The interior of the charging pad contains two coils, facing opposite directions. This translates to multi-direction charging, meaning you can have your device sit in a horizontal or vertical position. Not only is this design aspect very convenient, but it’s also a demonstration of flexibility and creativity.
Charging Capabilities
When it comes to the charging capabilities of the NANAMI charger, the clue is in the name. It offers the maximum charging rate of 10W for most Qi-enabled devices. However, as we’ve mentioned, there are inherent limitations when it comes to charging Apple products. Most iPhones, for example, can only accept a maximum of 7.5W.
Compatibility
The NANAMI Wireless Charger is compatible with a variety of mobile phones that support Qi wireless charging. Most of the latest models from big brands like Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, or LG already qualify for Qi compatibility.
Accessories
Included with the NANAMI Fast Wireless Charger are a black micro-USB cable and a user’s manual. If you want to maximize your charging toolkit, you can opt to pay extra for the QuickCharge 2.0 adapter.
The Tozo W1 has been given the label as one of the thinnest wireless chargers in the market, and it’s easy to see why. Just by looking at this charger, you can already be amazed by just how “thin” it is. The disc-like charging pad is only 3.9 inches in diameter and less than 0.2 inches thick. That’s about the same size as an extra thin mug coaster or a mini-CD. And surprisingly, it has a small USB port on its barely-existent side.
The aluminum component of the charging pad charge phones quite efficiently, but it also has a few tricks up its sleeve. In addition to traditional charging, it offers protection against overheating and short-circuiting. The system can tell when a foreign object is placed on top of it, at which point it will shut down automatically.
Charging Capabilities
The Tozo W1 Wireless Charger is capable of charging phones at a maximum rate of 10W. However, since it follows the Qi standards, it will only be able to charge iPhones at a maximum rate of 7.5W.
Compatibility
The Tozo W1 Wireless Charger is compatible with most Qi-enabled smartphones and wireless earbuds. The charging pad might even accept mini tablets, but not medium-sized or large tablets. In any case, the LED indicator will tell you if a certain device can charge on the pad or not.
Accessories
The Tozo W1 Wireless Charger comes with its own cable USB cable that plugs into the back of the charging pad. The company expects you to provide your own adaptor, which most people already have in the first place. The company recommends a 5V/2A-type wall adapter instead of the 5V/1A iPhone adapter.
The Belkin Boost Charge Pro 3-in-1 is a multi-purpose wireless charger with a practical and sturdy design. Like most wireless charger stands, it can charge up to three devices at the same time. While it’s being advertised for Apple devices, it can work with any other Qi-enabled phones, earbuds, and smartwatches.
The Belkin Boost Charge Pro is available in neutral shades of black and white. Its base is made up of a sturdy plastic material that is weighted underneath to keep your devices in place. The base has a diameter of about 13.5 cm or about the size of a mug coaster. At the center of the base is a circular marker where you have to place your AirPods. Behind this circular marker is a metal pole that leads to additional charging stations for the iPhone and Apple Watch.
The iPhone charging pad is to the left of the stalk, while the Apple Watch charging pad is located on the left. The former is visibly larger in diameter compared to the Apple Watch charging pad. Nonetheless, all three charging stations contain magnetic components that clasp onto the devices.
Charging Capabilities
The Belkin Boost Charge Pro is a MagSafe charger and works best with Apple devices. It can charge an iPhone for a speed of anywhere between 10W to 15W, while it can only charge Android devices for a maximum speed of 7.5W. It’s essentially the complete opposite of the scenario when dealing with Qi chargers. In other words, you can expect ultra-fast charging for your Apple devices but not for Android.
Compatibility
The Belkin Boost Charge Pro can charge both Android and iOS devices. Technically, MagSafe is backward compatible with Qi devices, which is why you can charge Apple devices with a Qi charger. It works the other way around as well, so you can charge Android devices on a MagSafe charger.
Accessories
Included with the Belkin Boost Charge Pro are a thin USB-C type cable and an instruction manual. The USB-C cable plugs into the back of the charger at one end and plugs into an adapter at the other end. An adaptor is not part of the package, but you need one to plug the charger into a power source.
The Anker PowerWave Pad is a simple and affordable charging solution for your mobile phone. Its design is entirely minimalistic, with only a single charging plate attached to a cord and power adapter. The charging plate has a circular shape and a flat top and bottom. It’s about the same size as a small mirror. The bottom portion of the charging plate has a few rubber pucks to keep the charger in place.
The charging pad itself has a diameter of approximately four inches. Meanwhile, most mobile phones have a height of upwards of five inches, which means that about 80 to 90 percent of the device should nestle comfortably on top of the pad. In addition, the partially rubberized texture of the pad should keep the device in place.
Charging Capabilities
Anker’s charging pad is a Qi charger which means that it can charge Android devices with a maximum speed of up to 15W. Meanwhile, the limitations for charging Apple devices still apply. It can charge iPhones at a maximum speed of 7.5W and Apple AirPods at a maximum speed of 5W.
Compatibility
The Anker PowerWave works with most brands with wireless charging capabilities. It works with the latest models from the most popular brands such as Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, Sony, to name a few. In addition to phones, it can also charge wireless earbuds with Qi-compatible cases.
Accessories
The Anker PowerWave Pad ships with its own USB-C type cable and power adapter. The USB-C cable is about four feet long, which should make it easier to access hard-to-reach power outlets.
The Yootech wireless charger is a simple yet effective solution for your mobile charging woes. The charging pad adopts a disc-like design with a circular body and small height. The upper half of the charging pad has a black color, while the bottom half has a neon green color. Connected to the charging pad is a black USB cable that plugs into an adaptor.
You might notice a rubber ring around the middle portion of each pad for both sides of the charging pad. The rubber ring facing upwards has both an aesthetic and practical purpose. It indicates the area for power transmission, and it also keeps your phone steady during charging. Meanwhile, the rubber ring at the bottom keeps the charger in place.
Charging Capabilities
The Yootech charger can deliver a maximum rate of 10W for Android devices, up to 7.5W for iPhones, and 5W for everything else.
Compatibility
The Yootech wireless charger supports a wide selection of electronic devices. The list of devices that it supports includes mobile phones, electronic watches, MP3 players, laptops, GPS, as well as other wireless items. The charger prioritizes Android devices when it comes to charging, but it’s also backward compatible with Apple devices.
Accessories
The Yootech package includes the charging pad, a USB-C type adaptor, and an instruction manual. Like most Qi chargers, you are expected to use a spare adaptor to connect to the cable. Yootech recommends a Quick Charge QC 2.0/3.0 adapter or a PD adapter that comes with an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phone.
The Pixel Stand is the very first wireless accessory that Google made for its Pixel phones. The stand is heavily advertised as a companion to Pixel devices, but it can still work with any other Qi-enabled Android phone. However, you might experience a slower rate of charging for non-Pixel phones.
Upon first inspection, the Google Pixel Stand has an Apple-like design. It copies the all-white aesthetics of an Apple product, with a circular base connected to an oval stand. The stand leans backward by about 70 degrees, and you can’t adjust its angle. In front of the stand is a tiny rectangular ridge that acts as a stopper for the phone. Despite having smaller components, what you have is really a single device that cannot be pulled apart.
Almost the entirety of the Pixel Stand is composed of a combination of plastic and silicone. While this combination of materials doesn’t exactly cream high-end, it does make for a solid yet lightweight exterior. We’re just mildly concerned about traction since its composition seems to be more plastic than silicone.
Google intended for the Pixel Stand to serve as a nighttime or daytime case for the Pixel devices. It works with a variety of wake-up and special notifications features on the Google Pixel phones. In other words, its ideal location is next to your bed, to nestle your phone at night while you sleep. But despite it being built especially for Pixel phones.
Charging Capabilities
The Google Pixel Stand has a charging output of up to 10W for any Qi-compatible device that fits into its charging base. However, its actual output will still depend on the charging capacity for your devices. Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL, for example, has a maximum capacity of 10W. Meanwhile, the Google Pixel 4 and the Google Pixel 5 have a maximum capacity of 11W and 12W, respectively.
Compatibility
The Google Pixel Stand was created primarily for Google Pixel 3, Google Pixel 3, Google Pixel 3 XL, and Pixel 4 and 5. But it also works with the latest Qi-enabled devices from Apple, Samsung, LG, Lenovo, and so on.
Accessories
Included in the package of Google Pixel Stand are a charging pad, a 1.5-meter USB-C cable, and a power adapter. The power adapter helps to maximize charging speeds.
The Mophie 3-in-1 Charging Pad is a multi-purpose charger with a lightweight yet sturdy design. A good portion of the device is made of plastic, with a silicone casing. The non-charging areas are made up of plastic, while the charging pads are made up of silicone. At the bottom of the device is a non-slip rubber ledge to keep your devices in place.
There Mophie Charging Pad contains three charging sections for different devices. The towering rectangular-shaped structure in the middle is the phone stand, and it has a tiny ridge at its feet to support your phone. Notice how the phone stand is tilted ever-so-slightly backward at just the right angle. This is so your phone remains functional while it charges. The charger is not even specific about the orientation of the device, and you can charge your phone vertically or horizontally.
Meanwhile, small depression on the left side of the base unit is meant to hold earbuds. On the other side of the small depression, and next to the mobile charging station, is a small, circular stand. The stand perfectly fits the case of most smartwatches out there, and it has a ridge at the bottom to support the watch.
Charging Capability
As a Qi charger, the Mophie 3-in-1 Charging Pad can offer the best charging speeds for Qi-enabled devices. It can charge each device with a speed of up to 10W. On the other hand, Mophie’s charging pad still suffers from the limitations of charging Apple devices on Qi. The best it can offer for iPhones is 7.5W and 5W for Apple Watches.
Compatibility
Mophie’s 3-in-1 Charging Pad can charge any Qi-enabled device that fits into any of its charging stations. It can accommodate Apple devices as well, but charging is optimized for Android devices.
Accessories
The Mophie 3-in-1 Charging Pad arrives with individual components which can be assembled and disassembled. The package includes the base station, an iPhone charging stand, and an Apple Watch stand. The package also comes with a power adaptor and quick-start guide.
We have reached the end of our list, and we have but a few observations. The most striking aspect of these wireless chargers, besides their obvious capability to charge wirelessly, is their flexibility. The fact that both Qi and MagSafe chargers offer backwards compatibility is certainly impressive, and it should make it easier for you to select a product.
Another thing that we’ve noticed is that most Qi chargers don’t come with their own power adaptors, which isn’t that much of a problem since most of us have a few spare adaptors lying around. While the technology isn’t perfect, the concept is absolutely practical. It will be such a pleasure to see the technology evolve and improve over time.
