One of the more popular characters of Genshin Impact is Childe. When he first appeared, he became an instant hit among players — more so when his Character Banner launched in the game. He is a formidable Hydro character that can dish out massive amounts of damage.
If built well, Childe is one of the strongest and best characters in Genshin Impact. With that, this build guide will help you create the best and the most robust build that you can use for Childe in solo or multiplayer sessions in Genshin Impact.
Who Is Childe?
Childe is a Genshin Impact character with many names. You might know him as Tartaglia (his name when you obtain him), Childe, or even as Ajax. He is a playable 5* Hydro character in Genshin Impact.
His first appearance was in the Archon Quest for Liyue. He is the 11th of the Fatui Harbingers, an organization under the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya. He served as the main antagonist of the Liyue Archon Quest.
There are many things that players love about Childe but what piques their interest the most is that he can use two weapons. While he is primarily a Bow user, he can also use twin swords in his Melee stance. This not only makes him stronger but it makes him more flexible as a character. You’ll be able to do more damage and it enables you to have more mobility than other bow users.
As a 5* character, Childe is a limited character in Genshin Impact. You can only obtain him during his Character Banner.

How to Get Childe on Genshin Impact?
Since Childe is a 5* character, he is only available on limited banners. You cannot obtain Childe on other banners or the Standard Banner. The best way to obtain him is to wait for his next Character Banner and dedicate your Character Summoning materials to it. As of writing, Childe recently had his banner during the 1.4 Update which happened in April 2020. There are still no confirmed reruns for Childe but you can expect that he might make it into a Limited Banner soon.
When farming for Primogems and Intertwined Fates to use as Summon materials, always remember to complete your Daily Commissions and your Battle Pass achievements to get rewards. Remember that you don’t have to spend money to be able to obtain Childe, Genshin Impact is still a gacha game no matter how you put it. Just don’t be disappointed when you fail to get him the first time. You will still have other chances when the Character Banners reset every update.
How to Use Childe on Genshin Impact?
Childe’s skill set is easily one of the strongest in Genshin Impact. You will need to dedicate time and effort to upgrading his talents if you want him to dish out the highest Crit Rate and DMG as possible. For Talent priority, follow Elemental Skill > Elemental Burst > Normal Attack. You will be able to make more damage using Childe’s Elemental Skill so you need to focus on that first before moving on to his Elemental Burst and Normal Attack.
With that, here are Childe’s Talents that you should take note of so you know what to expect when you level them up.
Combat Talents
When looking at the Combat Talents of Childe in Genshin Impact, there are a lot of factors to consider. One of the largest factors to consider is his stance. Childe, at present, is one of the only two characters who can switch between two weapons. It can get a bit complicated but it’s easy to get a hang of when you’re in-game.
Cutting Torrent (Normal Attack)
- Normal Attack: Shoots six consecutive shots with a bow.
- Charged Attack: Shoot an Aimed Shot with increased DMG. A fully charged arrow will deal Hydro DMG and apply Riptide to its target.
- Plunging Attack: Childe will fire a shower of arrows mid-air before striking the ground. This grants AoE DMG upon impact.
- If Childe is in Melee Stance, we will not be able to perform a plunging attack.
- Riptide: Enemies with the Riptide status will suffer AoE DMG when they are attacked by Childe.
- Flash: An Aimed Shot strikes an opponent with Riptide and deals consecutive AoE DMG.
- Burst: If an opponent affected by Riptide is defeated, it creates a Hydro burst that will inflict Riptide on nearby opponents.
Foul Legacy: Raging Tide (Elemental Skill)
Childe can enter Melee stance and deals Hydro DMG. In his Melee, Childe’s Normal and Charged Attacks will have Hydro DMG. Other elements cannot override this.
- Normal Attack: Performs up to 6 Hydro strikes.
- Charged Attack: Deals Hydro DMG with a cross slash. This consumes a certain amount of stamina.
- Riptide Slash: Hits opponents with the Riptide with a Melee Attack that unleashes Riptide Slash that will deal AoE Hydro DMG.
Havoc: Obliteration (Elemental Burst)
- Ranged Stance: Flash of Havoc: Fires a Hydro-charged arrow that deals AoE Hydro DMG and applies Riptide.
- Melee Stance: Light of Obliteration: A slash will deal massive AoE Hydro DMG which will trigger Riptide Blast.
- Riptide Blast: Clears away the Riptide status and triggers a Hydro Explosion that will cause massive AoE Hydro DMG.
Passive Talents
Here are some of Childe’s Passive Talents in Genshin Impact that you should take note of. By unlocking these through Ascension, you’ll be able to make your character more formidable.
Never Ending (1st Ascension Passive) | The duration of Riptide extends for 8 seconds. |
Sword of Torrents (4th Ascension Passive) | When Tartaglia is in Melee stance, when there is a CRIT hit, Normal and Charged Attacks will apply the Riptide status to enemies. |
Master of Weaponry (Utility Passive) | Increases the Normal ATK of party members by 1. |
What Are Childe’s Constellations?
Constellations for Childe in Genshin Impact is hard to come by as he is a limited character. That said, if you want to unlock all of his constellations, you might want to invest your Summon materials (Fates and Primogems) in him.
Here’s a quick rundown of his constellations so you can manage your expectations:
- Foul Legacy: Tide Withholder – This constellation decreases the cooldown of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide by 20%.
- Foul Legacy: Understream – Childe restores 4 Elemental Energy whenever opponents affected by Riptide are defeated.
- Abyssal Mayhem: Vortex of Turmoil – Increases the maximum upgrade level of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide by 3.
- Abyssal Mayhem: Hydrospout – If Childe’s Melee stance is activated, this triggers Riptide Slash on opponents affected by Riptide.
- Havoc: Formless Blade – Increases the maximum upgrade level of Havoc: Obliteration by 3.
- Havoc: Annihilation – The cooldown of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide is reset when Havoc: Obliteration is cast in Melee Stance. However, this will only take effect when Childe returns to his Ranged Stance.
Best Genshin Impact Childe Build
For Childe’s build, there are a couple of things to consider. You can build him as a support for a stronger DPS or you can make him your Main DPS. There are a couple of ways that you can build Childe depending on his role so it’s up to you whether how you want to expand your build or make it better. Regardless, one thing remains the same to get a stronger Childe character and that is to equip him with the correct weapon and the best Genshin Impact Artifacts.
Here’s a build guide for Childe in Genshin Impact that you can use as a basis:
Recommended Childe Build
Weapon | Artifacts |
|
|
For any Hydro DPS character, the best artifact set for them is the Heart of Depth. A full Heart of Depth can grant you an additional 15% of Hydro Damage Bonus and increases your Normal and Charged Attack DMG by 30%. This is a great set to consider for Childe in Genshin Impact because his damage heavily relies on his attacks. His Elemental Burst and Skill take a while to cool down so you will need his Normal and Charged Attacks to deal damage while waiting.
Alternatively, you can also consider a complete Noblesse Oblige artifact set for him. This alternate set gives him an additional 20% Elemental Burst DMG and it also increases the ATK of his party members by 20%.
As far as weapons go, the best one to consider for him is The Viridescent Hunt. Not only does it grant an increase in Crit Rate but it also generates a cyclone that can attract nearby enemies and deal DMG to them. This is great because of Childe’s Elemental Skill. If you don’t have the means to access The Viridescent Hunt, you can consider Rust and Amos’ Bow as your alternatives.
Support Childe Build
Weapon | Artifacts |
|
|
To create a Support build for Childe in Genshin Impact, consider using a 2-piece Noblesse Oblige and 2-piece Retracing Bolide for his artifacts. It will increase your Elemental Burst DMG by 20% and it will also increase your Shield Strength by 35%. This build is easy to get a hold of because Retracing Bolide is an artifact set that is much easier to obtain than Heart of Depth.
In terms of weapons, you can consider The Viridescent Hunt or The Stringless as the best weapons for a Support build. While The Viridescent Hunt focuses on Crit Rate, The Stringless puts more focus on Elemental Mastery and increases Elemental Skill and Burst DMG. If you have any of these two, you’re good to go. However, if you don’t you can always make do with a Prototype Crescent or Blackcliff Warbow until you obtain either of the two recommended weapons.
DPS Childe Build
Weapon | Artifacts |
|
|
For a DPS Childe build, you’d want to equip a full set Heart of Depth on him. As mentioned, Heart of Depth is the ideal artifact set for any Hydro DPS as this helps them deal the most damage. However, if you cannot complete the set, the best alternative is a 2-piece Heart of Depth and a 2-piece Gladiator’s Finale as this will give him an increase in Hydro DMG and ATK%.
For weapons, you can go with Amos’ Bow which grants an increase in ATK and boosts the DMG from Normal and Charged Attacks. If you don’t have an Amos’ Bow, you can easily swap it out with a Skyward Harp, Viridescent Hunt, or Rust as these will have similar effects.
What is the Best Team Composition for Childe?
Building a team composition that is compatible with Childe in Genshin Impact is just as important as his build. You need a team that can support his skills, buff them, and makes reactions that will produce high damage.
That said, here are some of the best team compositions that you can use to support Childe in Genshin Impact.
Recommended
- Main DPS: Childe
- Support: Fischl / Kujou Sara
- Sub-DPS: Beidou
- Healer: Bennett / Diona
For Childe’s recommended team composition, you want to put him with a Sub-DPS who is equally as strong and whose Skill and Burst cooldown isn’t as long as Childe’s. In this case, you can choose Beidou, a 4* Electro Claymore user who is capable of duking out massive amounts of damage with her popular Elemental Skill. For Support, you also want another Electro because they will also act as the Resonance or the “Battery” for Beidou. This will allow you to use her Burst and Skill faster whenever Childe has his cooldown. In terms of Healers, you can either have Bennett or Diona on the team. Diona is a good substitute for Bennett if you already have Kujou Sara on your team because the latter’s buffing skills are at par with Bennett’s.
For this composition, try building Fischl and Beidou as an Off-Field DPS, Kujou Sara as a Burst Support, Bennett and Diona as Full Support.
F2P Friendly Team
- Main DPS: Childe
- Reaction: Xiangling
- Sub DPS / Resonance: Xinyan
- Healer: Barbara
If you’re looking for a Free-to-Play friendly build, you can try this one out. Keep Childe as your Main DPS but replace Beidou with Xinyan as your Sub DPS. Both characters are 4* Claymores but Xinyan is a Pyro character that will create a Vaporize reaction if paired with Childe. Next, you want Xiangling to be your Reaction and your “Battery” for Xinyan. The best thing about Xinyan is that her Elemental Burst creates AoE damage so you will need another Pyro character if you want to maximize it while Childe’s skills are on cooldown. For Healer, you can opt to use Barbara – just make sure that she is built correctly.
In this composition, you might have to change the build of your characters if you want them to better suit Childe. For Xiangling, build her as a Pyro DPS, Xinyan as a Support, and Barbara as a full-on Healer.
How to Ascend Childe
Most of Childe’s Ascension Materials are easy to get. You can always grind for the insignias by defeating Fatui Skirmishers on the map. The Varunada Lazurite stones are drops from World Bosses and the Cleansing Heart drops from the Oceanid in Qingce Village. All of this you can easily get through a couple of hours of farming. The Starconch is the easiest to obtain. You just need a keen eye while walking through the beaches of Liyue.
Here’s a quick rundown of what you will need to ascend Childe to his maximum level.
PHASE | LEVELS | MORA COST | ASCENSION MATERIALS | LOCAL SPECIALTIES | COMMON MATERIALS |
