What Does the Minecraft Cake Recipe Call for?
Here are the key ingredients or items that comprise the Minecraft cake recipe:
- 3 bundles of wheat
- 1 egg
- 3 buckets of milk
- 2 piles of sugar
If you still have one or a few of these ingredients missing in your inventory, don’t fret. We’ll show you how to easily obtain them in the next sections.
Getting Wheat in Minecraft
To make wheat from scratch, all you need is one hay bale, which you can mine in plains villages using a hoe. Once you have a hay bale, you have to whip out your crafting table and place the hay bale in the grid, like in this example:
One hay bale makes nine bundles of wheat. If you need more, just place more hay bales in the crafting grid.
You can also get wheat in Minecraft by looting chests in villages, dungeons, igloos, underwater ruins, pillager outposts, shipwrecks, and woodland mansions. If you’d rather grow your wheat, it can take ages for them to be fully grown. However, it’s a good investment if you’re planning to use wheat a lot in Minecraft. To make your own wheat farm, the basic materials you’ll need are seeds, bone meal, and hay bales. You can check out our guide on the best Minecraft farming ideas to get tips on how to get started.
Getting Sugar in Minecraft
Sugar is another Minecraft cake ingredient that you can easily obtain in the game. You can make it from scratch in two ways: either with sugar cane or with a honey bottle. One sugar cane yields one sugar, while one honey bottle yields three piles of sugar. If you have a compound creator, you can also craft sugar by combining six carbon, 12 hydrogen, and six oxygen.
Besides crafting sugar from scratch, you can also get them from witches. These mobs can drop up to five sugars upon death. However, keep in mind that there’s only a 12.5% probability that witches will drop sugars when they die. If you don’t want to leave your acquisition of sugar up to chance, it’s best to make it from scratch.
Obtaining Milk Buckets in Minecraft
Unlike with sugar and wheat, you can’t get milk buckets in Minecraft with a crafting table. In Minecraft PE, you can only add it to your inventory by harvesting it from cows, mooshrooms (or mushroom-covered cows), or goats.
To get a milk bucket, you’ll of course need a bucket first. You can make one by placing three iron ingots in a 3×3 crafting grid following this pattern:
Once you have at least three buckets, you now have to look for a cow, a mooshroom, or a goat. Cows can be mostly found in villages, plains biomes and jungle biomes, while goats usually roam mountain biomes. Mooshrooms are rarer and can only be spotted when you’re in the mushroom fields.
To milk any of these animals, first, press the bucket from your hotbar. Then, tap on the cow, mooshroom, or goat to fill the bucket with milk. Repeat the process at least three times so that you have enough to make a cake in Minecraft.
Farming Eggs in Minecraft
The last thing you need for the Minecraft cake recipe is an egg. And much like in real life, you can get eggs in Minecraft by waiting for chickens to lay them. Luckily, chickens are common mobs in the game, and they can spawn pretty much anywhere that has grass and a light level of at least 7.
In Minecraft, chickens usually lay eggs every five to ten minutes. So, if you’ve found a chicken, just hang around it long enough, and you can get yourself a few eggs.
Besides waiting for chickens to lay eggs, though, you can get eggs in Minecraft by killing a fox that’s holding an egg. If you don’t want to hurt the fox, you can get it to drop the egg by dropping a food item in front of it. In addition, there’s a 23.3% that you’ll find one to three eggs in a fletcher’s chest in a village.
How to Make a Cake in Minecraft
Obtaining the four ingredients for your Minecraft cake is the toughest part. But once you have that sorted, making the cake itself will just be a breeze. Below, we walk you through the process step-by-step:
- Place the crafting table, and stand in front of it.
- Now, launch the 3×3 crafting grid by tapping on the crafting table.
- Place three milk buckets in the crafting interface’s first row.
- Place one pile of sugar in the first slot of the second row and another in the last slot of the same row.
- Now, add an egg in the middle of the two piles of sugar.
- Place the three bundles of wheat in the last row of the grid.
- A cake will then appear in the output slot to the right. Drag the cake to your inventory.
And that’s all there is to it! You now got yourself a Minecraft cake.
What Are the Different Uses of Minecraft Cake?
Cake serves various purposes in Minecraft, although, expectedly, it’s mostly used as food. However, unlike with most other food items in Minecraft, you can’t just eat cake after selecting it in your hotbar. You’ll need to first place it on top of a solid block, like dirt, plants, and wood, among others. Once you’ve laid it down, you can now eat it by tapping on the cake. With every tap, you consume one cake slice out of seven. Each slice restores 2 hunger and 0.4 hunger saturation points. So, if we do the math, an entire Minecraft cake restores 14 hunger and 2.8 hunger saturation points.
Minecraft cakes are also great for sharing. If you’re in multiplayer mode, you can invite a few friends over, and you can all eat slices of the cake at the same time.
Besides consuming it as food, a cake can also be placed in a Minecraft composter to increase the compost level by 1. You can also place a lit candle on top of it to create a birthday cake or use it as a light source. Plus, since cake is a stackable item in Minecraft, you can create structures with it or even use it to build a staircase.
Will the Minecraft Cake Recipe Work in Real Life?
You can make a cake in real life if you follow the Minecraft cake recipe. But will it be a good one? Not really. If baked in an actual oven, the Minecraft cake will turn out tough and dense — almost like stale bread. That’s because it lacks a few key ingredients, namely baking powder (or any rising agent) and fat. Plus, you’ll need more than one egg to bake a good, fluffy cake, especially if you’re adding in as much flour and milk as the Minecraft cake recipe calls for.
Food scientist and dietician Ann Reardon (who also has a YouTube channel) posted a video where she put the Minecraft cake recipe to the test. In the video, she bakes two cakes; the first uses the exact ingredients and proportions in the recipe, and the second has some modifications. So, if you want to see how the Minecraft cake recipe works in real life but don’t have the time and ingredients to do so, you can check out her video below:
