How to Make Smooth Stone in Minecraft Survival Mode

If you’re playing in Survival Mode, it takes a bit more work to make smooth stone in Minecraft. Below, we walk you through all the things you need and the steps to make this item.

What You Need to Make Smooth Stone in Minecraft

The materials you need to make one smooth stone in Minecraft are the following:

  • 1 Stone
  • Furnace
  • 1 Fuel (any type)

We discuss each of these materials in more depth in the next sections.

Stone

The main ingredient is stone, which you can obtain in one of three ways: mining, looting chests, or smelting. If you’d rather mine stone rather than make one from scratch, you’ll easily find blocks of it in the Overworld, particularly underneath dirt, grass blocks, and gravel, among other places. However, the only way you can mine stone directly is by breaking it with a pickaxe that’s enchanted with Silk Touch. If you use a regular pickaxe, the stone will drop cobblestone. You can also get stone by looting Masons’ chests in villages.

If you already have some cobblestone as well as a furnace and fuel, you can just smelt one piece of cobblestone to make one piece of stone. To do that, simply open the furnace. Then, place fuel in the bottom slot and one stone in the top slot.

Furnace

Since smooth stone is made through smelting and not crafting, you’ll also need a furnace. If you don’t have one yet, you can make it from scratch by placing eight cobblestone, blackstone, or deepslate blocks in the 3×3 crafting grid, as in this example:

Note that in Minecraft PE, you can only use one type of block to fill up all eight slots when crafting a furnace.

Fuel

Of course, you’ll also need fuel to be able to use the furnace. Here are all of the types of fuel you can use to make smooth stone in Minecraft:

Fuel Types
Lava Bucket Block of Coal Dried Kelp Block Blaze Rod Coal Azalea
Charcoal Boat Boat with Chest Scaffolding Bee Nest Wool
Beehive Log or Stripped Log Wood or Stripped Wood Planks Wooden Slab Carpet
Wooden Pressure Plate Wooden Button Fence Gate Wooden Door Wooden Trapdoor Bamboo

Smithing Table Fletching Table Loom Bookshelf Lectern Wooden Sword
Composter Chest Trapped Chest Barrel Daylight Detector Bowl

How to Make Smooth Stone in Minecraft

Once you have all of the materials you need to make a smooth stone in Minecraft, it’s time to get smelting. The process is incredibly easy and only requires a few steps:

  1. Add the furnace in your hotbar.
  2. Tap on the spot where you want to place the furnace.
  3. Tap on the furnace to open it.
  4. Place the fuel in the bottom slot and the stone in the top slot of the furnace.

  5. Place one stone in the top slot of the furnace.
  6. Wait for the furnace to completely smelt the stone.
  7. If there’s still some fuel left, drag it back to your inventory so that you can use it again.
  8. Drag the resulting smooth stone from the output slot to your inventory.

And that’s it! You now have one smooth stone. If you need more (which you likely will), simply repeat the whole process as many times as necessary.

Can You Harvest Smooth Stone in Minecraft?

If you don’t have enough cobblestone to make smooth stone in Minecraft, you can simply harvest it. Smooth stone can be found in some houses in plains, snowy plains, and savanna biomes, as well as in the Butcher’s house in villages. They usually come in the form of blocks and slabs.

Once you come across a smooth stone, you need to mine it with a pickaxe. If you try to break it by using your hands or some other tool, it doesn’t drop anything.

You can also get smooth stone in the game by looting chests, particularly Masons’ chests in villages. There’s a 20.8% chance that you’ll find a smooth stone in these chests.

What Are the Uses of Smooth Stone?

Smooth stone is a very handy material in Minecraft and can be used in a lot of ways. We list its most common uses below.

Making Blast Furnaces

Smooth stone is most commonly used for crafting blast furnaces in the game. Just like a regular furnace, a blast furnace also smelts blocks and all sorts of items. However, it does so at twice the speed.

You can create the blast furnace by processing three smooth stones, a furnace, and five iron ingots. Once you have the said items, open the 3×3 crafting grid, and place the furnace in the very center. Then, place the iron ingots in the top row and on either side of the furnace. Lastly, the smooth stones should go on the three slots in the last row.

Crafting Smooth Stone Slabs

Another common use for smooth stones is making smooth stone slabs, which are half as tall as smooth stone blocks. To craft smooth stone slabs in the game, all you need to do is place three smooth stones in the last row of a 3×3 grid to create six smooth stone slabs. Here’s an example:

You can also make smooth stone slabs from smooth stones using a Minecraft stonecutter.

Building Houses and Fortresses

Smooth stone is also good for building houses and fortresses in the game. That’s because it has a high blast resistance, which means whatever structure you make with it won’t be destroyed easily by explosions. Plus, it has a smooth, uniform design, so houses made from this material have a much cleaner and neater look.

Is Smooth Stone Stronger than Other Stones in Minecraft?

Smooth stone, which has a blast resistance of 6, is stronger than a few other stone types in Minecraft, namely: basalt, dripstone block, sandstone, and red sandstone. Here’s a chart showing the blast resistance of each of these stones:

Stone Type Blast Resistance
Basalt 4.2
Dripstone Block 1
Sandstone 0.8
Red Sandstone 0.8

Final Thoughts

Learning how to make smooth stone in Minecraft is incredibly easy. All you need are some stone blocks, a furnace, some fuel, and you’re good to go! You can also harvest it using a pickaxe in a number of places in the Overworld. To add to that, it can come in handy when making a few things, like houses and blast furnaces.
