To turn off NSFW on Reddit mobile, you need to use different settings depending on whether you have an iPhone or an Android phone. NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content includes adult or explicit material, and the official Reddit app provides dedicated controls to hide it from your feeds and search results.
Turn off NSFW on iPhone
On iPhone, the setting to turn off NSFW content is located in the iOS Settings app, not inside the Reddit app itself. The iOS control is in device settings, not inside the Reddit app itself. Follow these steps:
- Open the iOS Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Reddit.
- Under Reddit Settings, toggle Show NSFW Content (18+) off.
You will also see a separate option called Blur NSFW images. Reddit also documents that the iOS app has Blur NSFW images, which affects how NSFW items are displayed rather than whether they appear at all. When this toggle is on, NSFW items can still appear in your feed but are blurred until you tap on them. If you want to avoid seeing any NSFW content at all, keep both toggles off.
Turn off NSFW on Android
On Android, the setting is inside the Reddit app itself. The Android control is inside the app settings. Here is how to disable it:
- Open the Reddit app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Under View options, toggle Show mature content (I’m over 18) off.
Reddit’s help page for viewing NSFW communities also describes this path as Settings > View Options > Show NSFW Content (I’m over 18).
What these settings do and don't do
These controls are documented by Reddit for the official Reddit app on iOS and Android only. When you turn off the NSFW toggle, the app hides NSFW posts from your main feed, subreddit feeds, and search results. Relying on unofficial methods may not give you the same consistent control as the official settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I re-enable NSFW content later?
Simply reverse the steps: on iPhone, go back to iOS Settings > Reddit and toggle Show NSFW Content (18+) on. On Android, go to Reddit app Settings > View options and toggle Show mature content (I’m over 18) on.
Does turning off NSFW affect all subreddits?
Yes, the setting applies globally to all subreddits within the official Reddit app. You cannot selectively turn off NSFW for specific subreddits using these official controls.
What does the Blur NSFW images toggle do on iPhone?
When Blur NSFW images is on, NSFW posts will still appear in your feed but are blurred until you tap them. This is useful if you want to see that content exists but prefer not to view it accidentally in public or work settings. If you want to hide NSFW content entirely, you need to turn off Show NSFW Content (18+).
Will these settings affect my Reddit account on the desktop website?
No, the mobile app settings are separate from your desktop user settings. To control NSFW content on the desktop version, you must adjust your preferences in your account settings on the Reddit website.
