Vimeo App: How it Works, Features, Prices

Mobile Apps

The advancement of technology has taken the world by storm. Back in the day, recording videos required large equipment. It was only possible to share them by making copies and giving them to other people physically. Over time, video recorders got smaller and became more portable. With the introduction of the internet, sharing videos became easier as well. Nowadays, you can send a video to just about anyone as long as you have a stable internet connection. Even better, you can share videos to a wider audience by uploading it to a video platform like the Vimeo app. You can also watch a variety of videos using the same platform. But, how exactly do you do that? Let us find out.

First of all, let us discuss what Vimeo even is. Because most people are more familiar with YouTube, it is easy to forget Vimeo. However, do not discount Vimeo yet, as it has a lot of features as well.

Vimeo is an ad-free video platform that allows users to view a plethora of videos, similar to YouTube. Content creators can benefit from Vimeo through its various tools. For instance, it boasts 4K Ultra HD capabilities and a convenient way to manage your uploads. It also has a seamless post-production and collaboration feature, letting you streamline your workflow easily. In addition, Vimeo also comes integrated with Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.

With Vimeo, you can embed your videos anywhere you like and sell them globally. If you want, you can even start your own subscription network. Vimeo has also adapted to the current trend of live streaming, as it allows you to share live videos as they happen.

Personal computers like desktops are fine for stationary video viewing, but watching Vimeo videos on-the-go is where it is truly at. Nowadays, most people prefer to have a mobile version of everything. From social media sites to banking, an app makes everything a lot simpler and easier. After all, it is infinitely more convenient to access content and data on your smartphone. There is no more need to buy a computer or turn one on just so you can check on one small detail or view a short video.

Vimeo knows its audience. Therefore, the video-sharing platform has adjusted to fit the needs of the current market. Aside from having a website, Vimeo has made it easy for users to share and view videos on mobile. There are two ways to watch Vimeo on mobile phones or devices. Let us break them down below.

Vimeo App

The first way you can watch videos on mobile is by using the Vimeo app. Much like the YouTube app, the Vimeo app lets you view videos anywhere, provided you have an internet connection. No more waiting in line with nothing to do. Say goodbye to boring train rides and hello to an entertaining commute. With the Vimeo app, you can keep yourself amused for hours on end every day.

The Vimeo app is available on both iOS and Android. You can download the Vimeo app on iOS by going to the App Store and on Android by going to the Google Play Store. Once you download and install the Vimeo app, you can simply launch it. Once launched, you will see a sign-in page. If you do not want a personal account and only wish to watch videos, you can do so by tapping on “Skip” on the top-right corner.

From there, all you need to do to access videos is the following:

  • Tap on the magnifying glass to search for a video
  • Type in the keyword of the video you are looking for and press enter
  • Look for the video you want to watch then tap on it to begin watching

You will need an account to upload videos, though. So, if you do not have one yet, you can create one manually using your email address or continue with your social (Google or Facebook). If you already have an account, simply choose “Log in.”

Web Browser

The second way you can watch Vimeo videos on mobile is by using your mobile web browser. Vimeo has an intuitive mobile website that lets you view videos with ease. Using their mobile website is similar to using their standard website. So, if you are already familiar with their standard website, this should be a piece of cake for you.

To watch Vimeo videos using your mobile browser, follow these instructions:

  • Launch your mobile browser and go to vimeo.com
  • To start searching for videos, tap on the magnifying glass icon on the top-right corner of the page
  • Type in the keyword of the video you are looking for and press enter
  • Look for the video you want to watch then tap on it to begin watching
  • If you wish to sign in to your account, tap on the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner of the page
  • Click “Join or log in” then sign in to your account

How To Download Vimeo Videos On Mobile

If you expect to have a poor internet connection or simply want to save on data, later on, you can always save Vimeo videos for offline viewing. Downloading Vimeo videos is only available on the Vimeo app, though, so make sure you have that installed first.

Here is how to save Vimeo videos on mobile using the Vimeo app:

  • Tap on the magnifying glass to search for a video
  • Type in the keyword of the video you are looking for and press enter
  • Look for the video you want to watch
  • From here, you can do either one of the following to download the video:
    • On the video, you want to save for later, tap on the three vertical dots next to it then choose “Make available offline”
    • Tap on the video you want to save for later, tap on the three vertical dots on the top-right corner, then choose “Make available offline” (you can also just tap the download icon, which is a downward-facing arrow)
  • Wait for the video to download completely
  • To access your downloaded videos, tap on “Library” at the bottom of the screen
  • Tap on “Offline” and you will see all the videos you have saved for offline viewing

If you want to download Vimeo videos on a computer, though, you will need a separate program to do so. You can add a Vimeo downloaded in the form of a Chrome extension or use http://savevideo.me/ to download Vimeo videos by pasting the URL.

How to Speed up Vimeo Videos

Sometimes, you find yourself getting bored with the video you are currently watching and want to speed it up somehow. You know other video-sharing platforms already offer this functionality, so is there a way to do the same on Vimeo?

The good news is, Vimeo does offer playback speed controls to its viewers. However, the bad news is, it is not available to everyone. Only members with a PRO, Business or Premium subscription can add playback speed controls to videos they have embedded. If a Vimeo member does not have these subscriptions, they have no option to include playback speed controls.

You can check whether a video has playback speed controls by clicking on the gear icon found next to the volume control on the video panel. This will show a menu where you can adjust the quality and speed. If you do not see speed, then it means playback speed controls are not available for that video.

Vimeo on Demand

If you are only familiar with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO GO, then there is a good chance you have never heard of Vimeo on Demand. This service is similar to the aforementioned streaming platforms in that it provides Vimeo movies to watch. However, unlike Netflix and the others, Vimeo on Demand does not come with a monthly price tag for unlimited access to its content.

Vimeo on Demand allows you to either rent or buy Vimeo movies and shows. The option to buy is not always present, mind you, so some movies and shows can only be rented. The rental price and purchase price are not fixed either, with prices varying depending on the content. Additionally, if you decide to rent a movie or show, you are only given a window to watch it or forfeit it. The time period also varies, with some available for a 48-hour streaming period and others available for a 72-hour streaming period.

For instance, “People’s Republic of Desire” costs $3.99 to rent, with a 48-hour streaming period. It costs $7.99 to buy, allowing you to stream and download it anytime. On the other hand, “The Magnificent Cake!” costs $3.30 to rent, with a 72-hour streaming period. It costs $5.00 to buy, also letting you stream and download it anytime you wish.

It is worth noting that the movies and shows on Vimeo on Demand are not mainstream ones. You might wonder why you are not familiar with any of the titles there. Vimeo on Demand is an open platform for creators to sell their work. It is a good way to discover independent or rising filmmakers.

Use the Vimeo App for Easy Viewing

Vimeo has largely flown under the radar for the better part of the decade thanks to more popular platforms. However, that in no way means that Vimeo is not a force to be reckoned with. The Vimeo app, for one, is well-designed and allows users to watch Vimeo videos without much of a hassle. Vimeo also gives content creators a chance to shine with their Vimeo on Demand service. All in all, Vimeo has made an impressive name for itself in the video industry, and the Vimeo app is just the start.
