To find phone number by email address, the honest answer is that no official reverse search exists on iPhone or Android. The only reliable method is to view contact information that the person has already shared with you through an app or profile card.
The truth about how to find a phone number by email address
There is no official iPhone or Android feature that lets you search a person’s phone number by email address alone. The documented paths only let you view contact details if that person already appears in an app or contact list, or if they have shared the information publicly. This means the practical approach is not to hunt through databases, but to check the places where that person’s details are already visible to you, such as Gmail or Google Workspace.
How to see a phone number from an email in Gmail on Android
Google documents two ways to see someone’s contact information from an email in the Gmail app on an Android phone or tablet. Both methods only work if the person’s phone number is already stored in their contact card or profile.
- Open the Gmail app.
- Open an email from the person.
- Tap the profile picture at the top left of the message.
- View the contact information that appears, which may include a phone number if the person has shared it.
The second method works while you are composing a new message:
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap Compose.
- Enter the email address in the recipient field.
- Tap Enter or select the address from the suggestions.
- Tap the email address in the recipient field.
- Tap the profile picture in the new menu that opens.
- View the contact card to see if a phone number is available.
These steps are documented for Android phone or tablet only. They do not work the same way on other platforms, and they will not reveal a phone number that the person has not already attached to their profile.
How to find a phone number using Cloud Search on iPhone and iPad
If you use Google Workspace, the Cloud Search app on iPhone and iPad can pull up a person’s profile card. This is useful when you need to reach someone in your organization and their phone number is listed in their directory profile.
- Open the Cloud Search app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for the person by name.
- Tap the person’s name in the result card.
- Tap Call or the person’s phone number if it appears in the profile card.
This method is documented for iPhone and iPad only. It shows only the contact information that is already available in the account or profile card, so if the number is not listed there, the app will not help you find it elsewhere.
Why other common methods don't work
You will find plenty of articles about looking up phone numbers and customer service lines. And contacting an email provider to ask for a user’s phone number is not a documented process either, because providers do not reveal that kind of information. These methods may work in isolated cases if someone has publicly posted their own number, but they are not reliable, official, or consistent ways to get the information.
The same applies to tools that promise to find out a name from a phone number. Those services work in the opposite direction and do not help when you only have an email address. Likewise, if you want to check all Gmail accounts linked to my phone number, that is a separate account-recovery feature, not a way to discover someone else’s phone number from their email.
Reverse phone lookup websites like Whitepages, Spokeo, and Intelius, or email search services like Spokeo, EmailSherlock, Pipl, and PeepLookup, are not official or guaranteed methods. Some reverse phone lookup websites may also require a paid membership or payment for accessing detailed information.
The bottom line is that the only documented path is to open an existing message or profile card in Google services and view contact details that are already available there. If the number is not already shared in that account or profile, no official page documents another way to retrieve it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to find a phone number by email address?
Only if the person has already shared their phone number in a contact card, profile, or email signature that you can view. There is no official reverse search feature that works from an email address alone.
Why can't I see a phone number when I tap the profile picture in Gmail?
The contact card only shows information that the person has stored in their own Google contact profile. If they have not added a phone number there, the card will not show one.
Can I contact Google or Apple to get someone's phone number from their email?
No. Neither company documents any process for revealing a user’s phone number from an email address. Their support pages only cover how to contact their own support teams.
What should I do if the phone number isn't in the person's contact card?
Your best option is to reply to the email and ask the person directly for their phone number. No documented method exists to retrieve it if they have not shared it.
How do online services find phone numbers by email addresses?
These services aggregate and mine data from public records, social media profiles, and other publicly available sources to build their databases.
Are there any privacy concerns when searching for a phone number by email address?
Yes, using such services raises ethical and privacy implications, as it can involve accessing information that the individual may not have intended to be publicly linked or easily discoverable.
Can I find a phone number by email address on social media platforms?
Users often link phone numbers to their profiles for contact purposes, so checking the contact or about sections of a person's social media profiles can sometimes reveal a phone number if they have chosen to share it there.
Are there any alternatives to finding a phone number by email address?
If the number is not in a shared contact card, you can try reaching out directly via email to ask for it, or search for the person by name and location in online directories.
