How to read text messages on another phone using iCloud (iPhone)

To sync your message history across your Apple devices, you need to turn on Messages in iCloud and set up Text Message Forwarding. This works with iPhone, iPad, and Mac when the devices use the same Apple Account. The history includes SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage.

Before you begin, ensure two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain are turned on for your Apple Account. iCloud Keychain must be turned on for Messages in iCloud to work.

On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Messages.
Turn on Use on this iPhone on iOS 17.2 or later, or Sync this iPhone on iOS 16 through 17.1.
To receive SMS, MMS, and RCS on your other Apple devices, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Text Message Forwarding.
Turn on each device where you want to read your texts. The iPhone must be on and connected to Wi‑Fi or cellular for forwarding to work.

Once set up, your messages will appear on any iPhone, iPad, or Mac signed into the same Apple Account. This includes all your text messaging and T-Mobile texts, as the feature handles SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage from any carrier.

How to read text messages on another phone using Google Messages for web (Android)

Google Messages for web lets you read and reply to your Android phone's texts from a computer or tablet. Device pairing can use a QR-code prompt or Google account, based pairing, depending on the version and rollout state.

On your Android phone, open Google Messages.
Tap your profile image or account options, then select Device pairing.
On your computer, open Google Messages for web and sign in with the same Google Account used on your phone.
Follow the on-screen prompt to scan the QR code or complete the account-based pairing.

This feature is not available for iPhone. Google Fi confirms this is not available for iPhone.

What about parental monitoring?

Users should research legal compliance and consider official family safety features like Google Family Link or Apple Screen Time instead. No official Apple, Google, or carrier help page documents a “spy app” as a supported way to read someone’s texts. A SIM card reader can only retrieve messages stored on the SIM card, not the phone's internal memory. Newer smartphones may not store text messages on the SIM card, making a SIM card reader ineffective for recent messages.
